Death Valley is an amazing national park and winter is the best time to visit and photographic it.

In this workshop, we will be shooting in many of the most popular sites in the valley including:

• Zabriskie Point

•  Dante's View

•  Badwater

•  Furnace Creek

•  Artist's Palette

•  Rhyolite Ghost Town

•  Salt Creek Oasis

•  Giant Sand Dunes

Dates: We will be car pooling from the Bay Area starting at 8:00 am on Friday, January 11, 2013 and returning late in the evening on Monday, January 14, 2013.

Because of the distance, we will be traveling most of the day on Friday although we will make stops on the way.  There will be 2 full days of photography in the park on Saturday and Sunday.  On Monday morning, we will do an early morning shoot before departing for the Bay Area.

About The Instructor:  Landscape Photographer and Workshop Guide Dave Wyman has been doing workshops in Death Valley since 1986 so he is a very experienced instructor with a vast knowledge of the park and it's many locations for photography.  He will be able to take us to the best places at the best time to capture some memorable images.

Workshop Cost: $195.00 (A really great price). Hotel, transportations and meals not included.

This will be a really special workshop and hope you can join us.

Lovely workshop, and I actually enjoyed the weather! Thank you Ed, Dave, and Greg for organizing it!

For those of you interested in some world-class fire dancing who don't want to spend a week at Burning Man, there will be a free 2-hour fire dance show organized by Temple of Poi on the evening of April 27th in Union Square in San Francisco. Get there at least 90 minutes before sunset to grab a spot because it's very popular. You can take photos if you like, but just try to enjoy the show first and foremost. You can see photos from some of the past ones on my website.

Waldemar - Can you post your website? Also I was not really one of the organizers, I was a participant. Ed knew I like night and light painting and asked me to set up the dark photograph parts.

I post my photos in a few places. You can find my Burning Man and fire dancing photos on http://naturalturn.fo... I'm also on http://www.flickr.com...

Wonderful experience and thanks so much Edward for making this happen.

Things were a lot colder than I expected, but other than that the workshop went just as I expected it to. Good photos, good group, we got to most, but not all, of the best locations.

Death Valley is such a big place that it was really great to have Dave select the best locations for us to visit and photograph.

My first time in DV, I had a good trip with Irene and Brandon, and met other photographers.

Good trip/workshop. We had three in our car and that worked well. We treated this event as a sampling of Death Valley for photographers and as such it worked very well. We had little input from Dave, due to the size of the group. When we did see him he was helpful and cheerful. But the number of people made it impossible for him to help everyone. There were a lot of people on the trip and I didn't get to talk to any of them as much as I would have liked to. Name tags might have helped.

To those of you I didn't talk to, I am sorry, I hope we can talk sometime.

To those of you I did talk to, I hope we can talk some more. I enjoyed meeting all of you.

I particularly would like to thank:
-- Waldemar for the night performances
    -- Gordon for conservation
-- Everyone who came out for night photography
-- Ed for setting this up
-- Dave for signing the book
    -- Carla

I enjoyed the trip and I plan to go back!

What a fun meetup. It is like having a support group for the insanity of getting up before the sun and freezing to get a good photo.

This was my first (long) photo workshop and it felt to me more like a photo book camp (loved it). I really enjoyed making so many new friends and hanging out with photographer I met before and I hope to see them again soon. I believe this to be a very good group. Dave was excellent and very helpful. I like the spots and times he suggested for our photos ops. Thank you Dave; I will definitely go on another of Dave’s Workshop. I also feel that the group was a bit too big and next time we should split into smaller groups. Thank you every one for making my weekend so awesome!!!!! Ed, keep up the good work!!!!

I reserved a room with two queen size beds and would like to find someone to share the room to cut costs. If you don't already have a room, etc. let me know.

    December 18, 2012

    • Roger M.

      Gordon- got room?

      January 8, 2013

    • Gordon O.

No, I've already got a roommate.

has everyone paired up for hotel reservations yet? I'd like to make this call by tonight.

Well, today I opened my mailbox to see this workshop! Crazy!! I've been gearing up for a 10-day trip, starting in DV and working my way up through Tahoe, then down to the Valley before returning to the Bay Area. Now, I am evidently on the waiting list. It would be great to at least meet other photographers- drinks and all that at the motel? It's a small world.

Bristlecone Pines probably isn't possible as I think the road is closed due to snow. Unless you are good at hiking at 9-11k feet in snow...for miles to reach the first good grove.

      January 8, 2013

    • Roger M.

lol- yeah, I had reserved a truck a while back, but they just told me that it's a 4x2 when I confirmed my reservation. not good. so- that's likely out. like I said- weather/roads permitting. (not this trip - but I'd like to get out to Bodie with snow on the ground one day.) LOVE to talk with you all about this on Friday night. I'm sure that there's a lot I do not know.

Here's an idea for housing. People can rent a home from www.airbnb.com and split the costs. This also helps with eating expenses as you can buy groceries and cook/prepare meals at the home. Just a thought.

    • Edward W.

You do know this is Death Valley right. It's in the middle of a very large desert.

lmao! Well then, maybe not. :)

Fabian: You should have received an email with workshop information including car pooling. Let me know if you did not get it. Thanks.

Thank you Ed. I already talked to Waldemar amd we are good. My only questoon is: can I leave my car in the parking lot of Juniper Networks for 4 days?

      January 2, 2013

    • Edward W.

      Yes

      January 2, 2013

  • Brandon

I'm also interested in finding someone who wants to share a room. I haven't made a reservation yet.

    January 2, 2013

    • Edward W.

Why don't you contact Gordon. See his message below.

      January 2, 2013

  • Susie L.

I tried making a reservation at the hotel before signing up for the event so that I'd know I had a room. The website says there are no rooms available. Would be interested in a female room share if anyone is willing.

    January 2, 2013

    • Edward W.

Susie: As I mentioned in the writeup, you need to call the hotel directly. I spoke with them this morning and they have rooms available but please call them and also mention the group rate for our Meetup group - code: BAPE31. When you enter your RSVP, you can add a message that you are interested in sharing a room.

      January 2, 2013

    • Fabián S.

Susie, you need to call to make the reservation and let them know you are with the photo meet up.

    Is Racetrack on the itinerary?

    November 17, 2012

    • Edward W.

No because it's 27 very slow miles on a very, very bad road.

      November 19, 2012

  • Mary T.

How much hiking up inclines is there? What would you say is the activity level?

    November 19, 2012

    • Edward W.

Here is what Dave says: "reasonably short walks."

      November 19, 2012

  • Gordon O.

I've been looking for something new to do with my view camera and this could be it. It's been 13 years since I've been to Death Valley so I should be able to see it with fresh eyes.

  • Dori

I would love to go! But, I am hoping to have a job by then and most likely can't take two days off right away.
