BALD EAGLES AND WILDLIFE IN KLAMATH BASIN PLUS CRATER LAKE

BALD EAGLES AND WILDLIFE WORKSHOP IN KLAMATH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE PLUS CRATER LAKE

Bald Eagle Photos by Cheri Kanaan and Jack Sutton

Dates: Friday, February 8, 2013 to Sunday, February 10, 2013

Weather Forecast: As of Tuesday, February 5, the advance forecast for the trip looks good. There may be some rain showers on Friday but Saturday and Sunday are looking good with Sunny skiers and no prediction of rain. However temperatures will still be on the cold side with highs around 40 during the day so warm clothing is a must.

Klamath National Wildlife Reserve: The largest number of Bald Eagles in the continental US migrate to the Klamath Basin in winter to feast on the large numbers of birds especially ducks. I bet you thought that Bald Eagles were only fish eaters - I know that I did but that is not true.

This gathering occurs for only a few weeks in January and February. I recently talked to rangers at the Visitor's center who confirmed that there are quite a few eagles in the reserve.

Crater Lake: Since we will be staying in the city of Klamath Falls, we will be close to the beautiful Crater Lake Natural Park. Here is a link to a website with information about Crater Lake. You can also do a Google search for "Photos of Crater Lake". We are planning to visit Crater Lake on either Saturday or Sunday morning depending on weather conditions.

http://www.nps.gov/crla/index.htm

Workshop Schedule: We will leave the Bay Area on Friday morning at 7:00 am and drive directly to the Wildlife Refugee for some late afternoon shooting.

Friday Meeting Point: We will meet at Lane's Market, 109 South Pine Street, Dorris, CA (Tel:[masked]). We will take the auto tour located near Dorris on Friday afternoon and than travel to the hotel in Klamath Falls.

On Saturday (or Sunday) morning will travel to Crater Lake for some early morning images of this beautiful area. Next we will travel to the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refugee to photograph Bald Eagles and other wildlife. On Sunday, we will return to the reserve for a full day of shooting Bald Eagles and other birds and wildlife. After Sunset on Sunday, we will drive back to the Bay Area.

We will be setting up car pools to save on gas.

We have a group rate of $55.00 per night for a Premium Quality Single room in a good quality hotel with Free Wi-Fi and complimentary breakfast.

Price: $98.00 (not including hotels, meals or cost of travel).

Please Note: When you enter your RSVP for this event, you will be asked to answer a few questions. It is very important that you send the answers since we need that information to be able to run this workshop.

Hope you can join us.

What a great group we had for this trip and thanks to everyone who helped especially Greg The weather was terrific - not a raindrop or snowflake in sight at Klamath as well as clear skies. We saw almost 100 Bald Eagles, about 50 Golden Eagles, tons of hawks, vast numbers of geese and some beautiful shots of Mount Shasta.

This sounds like a great opportunity and I would be willing to travel from Phoenix, AZ to attend. Do you have a phone number that you could provide so that I could speak to you before confirming my RSVP? My personal email is [masked].

Hello Ed and all, I am signed on for the trip to Klamath Falls and want to arrange for a car poll ride on that Friday morning departure. Prefer to leave from Peninsula location but can meet at Bart station if necessary. Thanks let me know.

Since we will be traveling North from the Bay Area, we will be leaving from San Francisco. Going South, like for Death Valley, we meet in Sunnyvale.

      February 4, 2013

  • Edward W.

Michael: Sometimes the Meetup system gets confused. I do have you listed as attending but you are right that the Paypal payment did not go through so you can send it directly. Sorry about that.

    Ed,
When are you going to send info on the Hotel?

    January 18, 2013

    • Edward W.

We need to wait until we are sure that we will have a weekend with good weather before reserving rooms. Because of bad weather (snow) on the original weekend in January we have changed the dates, however, once again, we need to wait to see what the weather will be like in February before we can make a decision about the trip.

      January 18, 2013

    • Edward W.

You should have received an email with information about the hotel.

I am in Pleasanton, CA but would also be willing to drive if necessary.

This sounds like something I would really like to do, but I have something going on the weekend of Jan. 25-27. I don't suppose you would be willing to do another group the weekend before or after?

    January 12, 2013

    • Edward W.

We have re-scheduled the dates of trip to the weekend of February 8 to 10 because of bad weather on January 26 and 27. Maybe those will work for you.

      January 18, 2013

    • Kathy M.

I think they will! I just need to make sure I can get off work and then will sign up. Thanks!

I am leaving from HMB. I can carry 2 more people (I expect Oi is coming with me). I am thinking of stopping in Redding on the way back to photograph the Sundial Bridge, so if you come with me you will be a bit later getting back and have a few more good pictures.

Ed, the meetup page says I paid and asks if I want to request a refund. Not sue what to do here for the Bald Eagle trip. Let me know what your records show. Michael.

Hello Ed, I have to change my RSVP to No. I could not get the day off from work.
