Bay Area Search - Two Talks - Vamsi, Prathyusha, Jon, Ravi

  • Jan 22, 2014 · 6:30 PM

We will have two talks with four great speakers tonight!

Phrase Optimization in Query Rewrites

Abstract

In this talk we will present our recent work that improved eBay search relevance  through phrase optimization in query rewrites. The focus will be on the following approaches:

Phrase Match: Requiring certain query terms to be treated as phrases as opposed to bag of words (e.g. apple tv, new balance, iphone 5) thereby reducing irrelevant matches.

Phrase Drop: Dropping certain phrases in context (e.g. for sale in the query used cars for sale, buy from buy schwinn road bike) and thereby increasing recall.

His current research projects at eBay include user intent modeling in, search spam reduction, multi round ranking. He obtained his PhD from Penn State in 2008.

Prathyusha Senthil Kumar works in the Search Science applied research group at eBay focusing on improving search experience through enhanced query rewrites. Overcoming Low Recall:  A survey of Query Reduction Techniques

Abstract

User engagement drops significantly for search results pages with low recall.  Many users abandon the site when confronted with a low recall search page.  The reasons for generating low recall search pages include:  “over constrained” user queries or the inability of the search engine to understand the intent of the user query. This talk provides an overview of the various techniques that are explored both in academia and industry for combating this problem.  We provide an analysis of the techniques and explain why they are effective. We conclude the talk with a set of open problems in this area.
