Sewing can be a solitary activity. Though many of us connect via blogs and social media, getting together in person still has a special place.

Bay Area Sewists is a modern-day sewing circle, where we can meet in person and share inspiration and techniques, sew and shop for fabric together, swap patterns and fabric, and much more. The group was founded by Meghan Hunt of Made by Meg in 2012 who was the organizer until the end of 2013. In January 2014, Chuleenan Svetvilas of C Sews became the group's organizer and coordinated more than 30 meeutups since then.

To join Bay Area Sewists, there is a 30-day trial period. After that, you'll need to pay a $10 annual membership fee. The membership fee helps cover the fee Meetup charges to use its platform and other organizer expenses. (See FAQs below.) For more info, contact Chuleenan via the Meetup page.

FAQs

Can anyone join Bay Area Sewists?
Sure! If you have an interest in sewing - whether you are just learning to sew or you are an expert costumer - you are welcome to join the group. Our members range from people who have been sewing for less than a year to people who teach sewing professionally. 

How does the membership payment work?
You can join the group for free for 30 days. When you begin your 30-day trial, you are notified that Membership Dues automatically renew. Meetup uses WePay to process dues. Following your initial payment, you can see on your Meetup group profile when your member dues were last paid and when they are due to be automatically paid. Additionally, you can see the option to ‘Stop Member Dues,’ preventing dues from automatically renewing.

If you don't want to pay via WePay, the payment system Meetup uses, you can pay Chuleenan, the organizer, via PayPal or Venmo. Just ask Chuleenan for her PayPal/Venmo info (click on her profile on the Meetup page). Or you can pay in person at a meetup and she will note your dues payment in the system.

NOTE: One day before member dues are scheduled to automatically renew, members receive a message titled “Your Bay Area Sewists dues will renew soon.” You will have the option to halt the payment, but if no action is taken, the payment will be processed the following day.

Why do you charge dues and what do you do with the money?

It is not free to use the Meetup platform. For a group of our size, it costs nearly $200 a year. Your dues goes toward covering this fee. Also, there are other expenses, such as office and meetup supplies, and payment processing fees. Additionally, many hours are spent planning and organizing each meetup and building relationships with local businesses and indie pattern designers. Sometimes there are transportation costs to meet with business owners. After all expenses are paid, any extra money will now compensate the organizer.

Can I submit an idea for a meetup?
