Fitting Session and Pattern Giveaway!

Bring your muslins, sewing patterns, tape measures, pins, pencils, books on fitting - and we'll have a fitting session! If you've had successes (or failures!), please bring your WIPs (works in progress) and the finished garments so you can share what you've learned.

****UPDATE:  Ali will be demonstrating an FBA (full bust adjustment) and I will be doing a demo of an SBA (small bust adjustment).

I will also be giving away a foam dress form - it's a size too large for me. You can see what it looks like here. I got it from someone on Craigslist a few years ago and didn't realize that size 10 was larger than my measurements (39" up to 44 1/2" bust). If more than one person can use it. We'll hold a drawing for it.

******END UPDATE

The idea is that we can help each other with our muslins, particularly in areas, such as the back, where you can really use another pair of hands.

If you don't have a muslin, you can come to get your body measurements and/or bring sewing patterns you want to make and compare your measurements to the pattern and see where you may need to make adjustments.

If you are bringing a machine, please let me know so we can make sure we have enough space. If you want to bring your sewing machine, please let me (Chuleenan, the organizer), know. It would be great if some people could let folks use their machine but it's not required. We'll have space for about six machines. You can contact me via the link on the left sidebar.

Note: The $4 of each fee will be going to Lacis to compensate them for the space. Then 82 cents goes to WePay, Meetup's payment vendor and the remaining 18 cents goes in the group's kitty. If you'd like, you can pay me, the organizer, via PayPal and I'll mark you paid. Contact me via the contact link on the Meetup page and let me know you'll be paying this way. Let me know your meetup name and your Paypal email so I'll mark the correct member as paid.

Also, please note that it is free to join Bay Area Sewists, BUT if you want to attend a meetup, you need to pay our $5 annual membership fee. For just $5 a year, you can attend any number of meetups, most of which are free to attend.

Measuring: We can also help each other take accurate measurements. Wear something form-fitting (but NOT tight) if you want accurate measurements taken. For example a loose leotard or camisole and loose leggings. Wear comfortable shoes so your posture will reflect your usual stance.

Bring your favorite garments to get accurate length measurements that you can use for future garment making. For example, if you have a favorite cropped jacket, bring the jacket and we can measure the length from the neck to the bottom hem.

Fitting can take a long time so I've booked the space for 3 hours. You don't need to be there for the entire time but we'll do introductions at the beginning and we'll do the pattern drawing at 1:30 pm.

The pattern drawing will be the lovely Esme Top by indie pattern company Sew Liberated! I bought this pattern at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics the day of our August meetup. And that's what made me contact Sew Liberated to see if they would donate a pattern for us to giveaway. And the company has given us two patterns. The second one will remain a secret - we'll be giving that away in the spring. Thank you Sew Liberated for donating the sewing patterns!

While you're at Lacis, don't forget to check out the retail store (ribbon, lace, millinery supplies, vintage notions, and more!) on the first floor and the smocking exhibit on the second floor.

~Chuleenan

NOTE: If you can't make it, you will be refunded your money as long as you cancel at least one day in advance.

Deets

Date: September 20
Time: 12 pm to 3 pm
Pattern drawing: 2 pm
Location: Lacis, 2982 Adeline St., 2nd floor, Berkeley CA [not wheelchair accessible]
Parking: There is street parking but it is limited. On the weekend, there's a flea market happening all day at the Ashby BART parking lot so you likely won't find a spot there. You might be able to find parking on a residential side street but be sure to check the parking signs for time limits. You might consider parking at either MacArthur BART or even North Berkeley BART and then taking BART to the Ashby stop and walking to Lacis. It's less than one block from the Ashby stop.

***As always, all Bay Area Sewist meetup attendees get a 20% discount at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics on meeting days! So stop by their great store (2518 Shattuck Ave.) before or after our meetup - let them know you are a Bay Area Sewist member and show them the email I'll be sending members the day before the meetup. You can show the email on your smartphone or a printout.

I didn't take many photos because I was busy measuring. I showed how to so an SBA and add ease to bicep area. I'll put a link to an SBA in the discussion area, too.

  • Ali

I created a FBA link share discussion with LOTS o links. I hope they are helpful!

I have been ill and will not be attending today. See you next time.

Anyone coming from the South Bay and want to car pool let me know! Fair warning, I usually go to Stone Mountain afterward (I'm hoping they have the new Bruyere shirt pattern in from Deer&Doe!)

    • Ali

Hey! No problem, see you there!

I got gifted with the Pavot from Deer and Doe for participating in the Mini Wardrobe Contest on PR. Have you made any of their patterns before?

I have some lace to give away. It's not much (lots of trim), but if it can makes you happy, it's all yours!
I can also bring my sewing machine (an Elna 2600 - a basic model, very easy to use). Let me know if you want me to.

Thanks! You can also bring it to the next meetup - patter and notions swap. Bring your machine if you'd like to use it at the meetup. Otherwise, not required.

Don't worry, it seems like I will have more to bring in the next weeks. One of my friends is sorting her mother-in-law sewing notions.

I can bring my sewing machine if you want...

    1 · September 18

    • Chuleenan

Thanks for offering. Enough folks are bringing machines so you can bring it if you think you'll want to use it as you work on something. :)

  • Freja

I can't tell you how pleased I am about meeting such a dedicated and helpful group of sewists! As usual, unfortunately, I really won't know until the morning of the meet-up whether I can come. At least there wasn't a waiting list this time, but I'm really counting on on being able to join you this time.

    • Chuleenan

I've opened up the RSVP list - forgot that I had set it to close two days in advance. But now it's open up until the meetup starts.

Chuleenan, yes, I would be very interested in seeing the SBA demo on Saturday!

    • Chuleenan

Great! I'll be happy to demo. :)

      September 18

  • Ali

Is anyone interested in seeing a demo of an FBA? I've been doing a lot lately and could show how to do one on a pattern with a dart and without. Anyone interested...? Lmk!

    September 16

    • Chuleenan

And if people are interested in the opposite - SBA, I can demonstrate that. :)

      September 17

    • Ali

I'm glad we can provide demo's of both spectrums! Kari (and anyone else) - bring a pattern you want to do an FBA on! Best way to learn is to do! You could even create a muslin on the spot and see how it went. I'll bring my "fit for real people" book too to show. It's fab.

Shoot, I can't go. Something came up. Enjoy!

Oh, darn! We'll do another one in a few months. Maybe we'll see you then.

Thanks for spelling out the reason for the Lacis $5 cost.

    • Chuleenan

You're welcome! They are charging a very low fee - basically to cover the cost of electricity and clean up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
