First Meetup: Getting to Know You

Eventually these will become more formal gatherings, with hosted speakers or happy hours, sponsored networking events, and workshops. But let's start small with a "Getting To Know You" hour over drinks.

I've set up a poll for basic thoughts, thanks for that suggestion! If you guys have access to cool speakers, feel free to toss a meetup on there. I'm working on one for late March at my company offices, inviting a popular game writer to share how they find creative inspiration. I'll put up info once I'm 100% confirmed.

Would you guys be willing to pay say $10 for this if it went toward having drinks (beer, wine, sodas, and juice) and maybe light snacks at the event, or prefer to have to bring your own things (until we get big enough for sponsors ^_~)

Don't comment here! I started a discussion on the discussion board. :)

Those of you who were able to make it last night, it was great to meet you! I second Evan's suggestion, as far as making it easier for people to find one another - especially since there will likely be a healthy amount of new people next time - and would be interested in brainstorming alternative locations. It's tricky finding a venue that's casual and large enough to accommodate everyone, that's also quiet enough to hear each other, without sacrificing the ability to mingle freely and talk to everyone.

@Cass, we did end the night discussing some possible ways to structure future meet-ups, and one thing I suggested that may be valuable is to poll everyone about what they're hoping to get out of this group (my hunch is there will be a wide range of feedback, as there's such a wide range of industry experience represented). That may provide some sense of how best to go about structuring upcoming events.

Anyway, thanks again, it was a lot of fun. Hope we can get together again soon!

Okay, not enough room at four seasons. 9 of us are headed to the California pizza kitchen at 3rd and market!

Everything considered it went quite well. People got hungry and when the bar group merged with the lobby group, the group was getting too big to hang out in the lobby so we went out. Most of the evening was a lot of introductions, chatting about games, writing, ideas, etc. Thoughts at the end of the evening was formatting and purpose-driven ideas for future meetups, such as getting speaker panels or presentations on aspects of writing and writing construction (e.g. the 3-act structure), or a peek at the internal production workflow of tools and systems for getting implementing writing into games of various studios.

I would love to get folks thoughts on the challenges of getting data into games via tools and writing systems

I think going forward it will be important to have someone there with name tags and a Sharpie so we can find each other more quickly and easily in a crowded public space. We figured it out eventually, however, and had a good time at the California Pizza Kitchen around the corner. :-)

45 3rd street, cats and kittens. We'll see you there. Bring a phone charger if you can?

Did you guys find each other? I'm sorry I missed it, I promise to get future ones more organized, work just took me out of sf and I'm just headed back now. Ugh. Comment on how it went and what we want to do next.

Hey, we're all in the lobby of the 4 seasons lounge. Where are you guys?

    February 27, 2013

  • Paul W.

There are 6 of us in the lobby... Where is everyone else?

    February 27, 2013

  • Evan S.

For those who are here, please indicate where you are so we can find each other! :-)

In a shocking twist that will shock no one in the industry, I won't be able to attend the game writers' meetup tonight because I'm working late writing for a game.

Have a good time, folks. I'll try to catch you next time.

  • Alex H.

I'll be there! Looking forward to meeting this group! :)

Well it looks like I'm stranded in Santa Clara until seven so now I may even miss this. That's a terrible first impression. Sorry, but you guys should still meet tonight and I'll come if I'm up in time and I'll organize another one for march

Ugh, so apparently I now have a work field trip Wednesday and won't be back until 7pm, so I'll be at my own meetup pretty late. But I'll still come by. I'm going to officially change it to 7pm, but anyone is welcome to come by earlier. :)

Will definitely try to make it! I'm coming from Redwood City, so ditto on the traffic.

    February 9, 2013

  • Paul R.

I'll do what I can to get there, but I'll be coming from San Mateo, so... yeah. Traffic. :)

Like Jesse, I am also based in Santa Clara, so the later time would be better for me as well. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone!

Very excited about this group, thanks for having me :) I can probably make whatever work, but the later the meet-up the easier it will be for me as I work in Santa Clara.

    February 8, 2013

  • Ellis K.

Yay! I forwarded this to a few friends to join, too.

    February 7, 2013

  • Evan S.

Assuming 6:45 or so in SF proper, I should be able to make it. :-)

    February 7, 2013

  • Cass P.

PS: Tossed a tentative date for a first meetup up there. Work for folks? Location ideas?

    February 7, 2013

  • Cass P.

Welcome to the group, guys! I would imagine most I organize would be in SF proper, as that's where I'm based, but wouldn't mind someone doing others in the peninsula! I'll set a date for the first meetup once we hit about 25 people in the group, to try to get a decent turnout. Any suggestions?

    Let's do it! :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
