An Evening of Pairings

We will join the members of the Mechanics Institute to hear Evan Goldstein, Master Sommelier, and son of chef and writer Joyce Goldstein, who will give us his best recommendations on how to pair wine and cuisine with authority and audacity! At 5:30 pm we start with a wine tasting of varietals matched with artisanal cheeses and foods-- and at 6:00 pm Evan will talk about his new book Daring Parings, which will also be on sale.

We will then walk down the street to our reliable Japanese restaurant, Tempura House, which is quiet, for another tasting of most of the Bastille Day wines. Our reception at Art People on July 14th was a delight, but it wasn't conducive to rating and ranking the wines offered for our blog. This time we can sit down with other kinds of food--our own daring pairings--and fill out the "ballots" while enjoying the camaraderie of the group. We can also chat about Goldstein's recommendations.

Evan Goldstein offers an adventurous approach to pairing wine and food in his new entertaining and useful guide, Daring Parings: A Master Sommelier Matches Distinctive Wines with Recipes from His Favorite Chefs (University of California Press). Each entry includes a description of the wine variety, where it’s grown, what food it goes well with, what food it does not go well with, and a recommended recipe, with commentary from both the recipe’s creator and Evan Goldstein. Chefs from restaurants in San Francisco, to New Orleans, to New York participated, and the result is a delightful book, perfect for any one planning to entertain or anyone who simply loves food and wine.

Evan Goldstein is a four-time James Beard Award nominee for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year. He is the author of Perfect Pairings and Five Star Service: Your Guide to Hospitality Excellence, and is President and Chief Education Officer of Full Circle Wine Solutions. A regular editorial contributor to America’s Santé magazine, he is also a recurring guest wine expert on NBC’s syndicated television show In Wine Country and makes regular guest appearances on the top-rated Ronn Owens’ Show on KGO Radio and on Saturday morning television’s KPIX-Eyewitness News, both in San Francisco.

Our first taste-off was held at Tempura House over three years ago. It's not easy to find a place that will allow us to bring in multiple wines. This time I forgot that I had taken the wine glasses out of car to make room for a bed. I raced around to know avail looking for something to use, since the Japanese restaurant doesn't serve wine, only sake, and sake glasses are like overgrown thimbles. How amazing then that Ed, who had signed up via Local Wine Events not meetup just happened to have a dozen clean wine glasses in the trunk of his car! He saved the day. We all enjoyed the vibes, I believe, and the special wines. Results early next week.

Unusual wine and food pairings before Even Goldstein's talk. Now I want to get his new book, Daring Parings. His cooking knowledge completely informs and adds to his status of sommelier. After talk tasting a bonus!
