Sights and Sounds: d3.js on SoundCloud and with WebGL

  • March 19, 2014 · 6:00 PM

Márton Salomváry: How We Built New SoundCloud Stats Using D3

Márton will talk about code modularization, Backbone integration, cross-browser pixel-perfect SVG rendering, testing and other challenges we had to deal with to deliver a real life project using D3 and other technologies.

Adnan Wahab: Introducing PathGL

Adnan will show off his new library that sits between d3 and the DOM, allowing you to render to WebGL instead of SVG using all the d3.js features you love.

Schedule

6:00pm - Doors open

6:30pm - Márton: SoundCloud Stats

7:15pm - Adnan: PathGL

8:00pm - Show + Tell -> Socializing

9:00pm - Doors close

Trulia will be hosting us and providing beer and pizza!

Join us to see some great d3 projects, and let us know in the comments or by emailing the organizers if you want to do a quick 2 minute show-and-tell of something you've been working on with d3.js!

With Márton, it was interesting to see the nuts and bolts of how d3 was incorporated into an existing large project, and made to play nice with a big codebase.
Anand's pathGL just rocks! I hope to find a way to incorporate this in my work.

Is there any chance this will be webcast (for those of us in the east)?

    • Ian J.

we will be recording it and posting the video to youtube. in our experience live webcasting has too many problems for the price, and our videos go up within 1 or 2 days!

That sounds great. I agree with you about the perils of webcasting.

    Great stuff last night!

Here's a link to my shape-of-a-conversation sketch from the show and tell: http://sketchbook.onafloatingrock.com/fireflies/

d3 code is available on the linked github. oh, and obligatory "if you want to build cool stuff like this, we're hiring visualization experts at www.datahero.com" plug ; )

  • Vincenzo M.

Do we get added automatically if a spot opens up?

    March 18, 2014

    • Ali A.

In case you don't, you can have my spot. Sadly, I won't be able to make it.

      March 19, 2014

  • Mark T.

How big is the waiting list at this point? I'm on it, would still really like to attend enough spots open up.

    March 18, 2014

  • Rich R.

Yes. These early meetings conflict when work gets busy. It's the number 1 reason I cancel from time to time.
