Free! Friday Jazz: Mazor-Snyder Quintet @ Blackbird Tavern, SJ, Jun 27, 8 PM

Join me (Miki) at Blackbird Tavern when Mazor/Snyder Quinet take the stage to serenade our last Friday evening in June with some great straight ahead Jazz.

This is a self-hosted drop-in event. NO RSVP needed.

Well known bay area jazzer and recent CA Jazz Hall of Fame incductee Ron Snyder (saxes & flute), starts a new project with longtime friend and former student Mark Mazor. He’s a burning, undiscovered trumpeter from the Freddie/Woody school. The band includes James Wrubel-piano, Gus Kambeitz-bass, and Paul Yonemura-drums.

Rory Snyder is a Professor Emeritus from Diablo Valley College, and was the Director of Jazz Studies at DVC in Pleasant Hill. Rory recorded his first CD as a leader titled “New York Sessions” featuring Michael Wolff – piano, Wallace Roney – trumpet, John Patitucci – basses, and Victor Jones – drums. He has lead his own groups for bay area gigs for 20+ years at concerts and clubs like Yoshi’s Oakland, Jupiter, the Monterey, San Jose & Vallejo Jazz Festivals, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants, UCLA, Cal State Stanislaus, and San Jose State University.

Mark Mazor is originally from Los Altos, California. He began sitting in and playing Trumpet in Jazz Clubs from the age of 16. At age 18 Mark won a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music, where he earned his BA. He has been playing in a variety of Jazz Clubs including Yoshi’s Restaurant & Jazz Club, Faultline Brewery, Black Diamond Brewery, Brew City, Jupiter, Infusion, Black Cat, Rose Pistola, and more.

The trumpet player was amazing. The others were good as well. I agree with Miki. A long narrow bar with a small stage is not the idea set-up for audience or for the musicians.

The music was really good, but all the five members including the drummer were crammed in a tiny stage and looked very constricted to move. Wished the venue owner(s) were more considerate for the musicians....
