Yosemite Beginner's Backpacking - Pohono Trail

  • May 17, 2014 · 6:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We'll be doing this hike from Glacier Point to Dewey Point and back... http://www.everytrail.com/guide/pohono-trail-glacier-point-to-dewey-point

This is roughly an 18 mile roundtrip hike (9 miles in, 9 miles out) with very little elevation change, so perfect for those new to backpacking. This is also the early season, so it may be cold. But since rain/snow has been limited this year (sadly), it may be nicer than previous years. We'll keep an eye on the weather reports and be prepared. It's decently high elevation, so it may get chilly.

BEAR CANISTERS ARE MANDATORY IN YOSEMITE! You can buy or rent one, or share a big one with someone else.

We will be meeting Saturday morning in Fremont at my house at 6am. Those in the far East Bay (Oakley and Tracy) we can meet on the way out.

I will prioritize newbie backpackers for this hike, since I could only secure the max of 9 backcountry permits for this trail segment. I may allow an experienced hiker or 2 to help me though.

Also, because of the limited space, if you RSVP "yes" and don't show up, or cancel less than 48 hours before the hike, you WILL get a strike.

The permits cost me $5 each, plus a $5 booking fee, so $50 for 9 people. For this reason I am charging $6/person to RSVP. I will refund your money if you cancel before 48 hours of the hike, and if we can find you a replacement.

Guys, for eating, make sure you bring a utensil, and maybe some zip-loc freezer bags to pour your hot water into for cooking and eating out of the bag.

South Bay people... do you want to meet up together and then head to the central location in Fremont for carpools? Or are you each going to drive yourself? I can meet up wherever is convenient.
    Thanks,
    Moran

So is everyone good on everything? Please make sure you've watched my backpacking gear class on Vimeo if you've never backpacked before. Please also check my gear list and make sure you have mostly everything. The most important things are: Tent, Sleeping Bag (rated to 30 degrees or lower, I'd go 20 or lower), Sleeping Pad, Backpack, Good shoes, Good socks, One set of clothes that will keep you warm at night (it's one night. Don't bring any extra clothes. It just adds weight.), and 1.5-2 lbs of food.

Be warm for night. It'll be down to 40.

ariel, please add your info to the sheet...

      https://docs.google.co...

it will help you coordinate sharing stuff and drivers. you can probably borrow some spice in jon's bear canister.

Watch my gear class if you havent already :)

Hey guys. Yosemite DOES require bear canisters for your food and other smell-producing items. You can rent a bear canister, or you can buy one. This is the one I have...

    http://www.bareboxer.com/products.htm

It'll hold about 3 days worth of food for 1 person.

We probably only need 3 or 4 for the entire party. This is what I got, good for 3-4 man-day.

yeah, if we share. i'm sure we can. i could share with one other person. just dont bring too much food. "too much" meaning more than 2 lbs/day, which should be MAX for any hike. this should be fairly easy, so i'd stick closer to[masked] lbs/day, but depends on you.

Thanks for the gear video Steve. I have never been backpacking and am gearing up this week so your video was very helpful. I wish I could join you guys but I just joined Meetup this weekend so I missed out! Will shoot for the next event.

Steve, I can bow out if necessary to free up a spot. Have been out a few times since signing up., Although a yosemite hike is something new, others may be served better.

up to you jeremy. since there are only 9 spots, i'd like it to be mostly for brand new backpackers, but i don't wanna force anyone out. i'll leave it to your conscience ;)
