Alpine Dam - Sat AM

This ride is to do alpine dam loop in the counterclockwise direction
Route will be: GG Bridge, Sausalito, Camino Alto, Fairfax (lunch), Alpine dam, Seven sisters, Rockspring, Pantoll Ranger Station, 4 corners, Hwy 1, Sausalito, GG bridge.

Entire route should be about 60 miles.

This is a very beautiful ride. It has both climbings and descendings. If you have never done this ride, you should do it once.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/alpine-dam-bike-ride-fairfax

Attention everyone, and hopefully this is the final plan.

I now have a ride leader for 8am so we will go ahead with 2 groups.

Group 1 will leave at 7am. This is aimed for people who need more time climbing. Since I am slow (very), I will be in this group.

Group 2 will leave at 8am. This is for regular riders and will be led by Ryan.

Of course, you can choose to join whichever group that suits your schedule better.  If you miss group 1 for whatever reason, then just wait for group 2. Group 1 will leave no later than 7:10 btw.

At the GG bridge pavilion, please gather around the first concrete bench near the street.

Depending on the speed of each group, group 2  should catch up with group 1 somewhere during the climb toward Rockspring. The group that gets there first should wait for the other so we all can descend together.

To those not familiar with this ride, please check out this route sheet.  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2189260

Anyone want to do a Nicassio loop next Saturday? SF or Sausalito depending on where you live, out to Fairfax, up golf course hill to Nicassio store for a pit stop, continue on around Nicassio cross over to Samuel P Taylor park and back.

Welp, I survived the Marshall Loop, 78 miles & My legs are wiped! But it was worth it, rain, wind and all.

Congrats! Beautiful riding roads up there.

Thanks Peter for organizing a great ride. And a huge thanks to Ryan for being a great leader. How you managed to do that ride in one gear is mind-boggling, you're amazing!

    2 · June 9, 2013

    • Ryan L.

Thanks Julianne, great riding with you -- the bridge on the way back was crazy. My GPS recorded 4826 feet of elevation gain total on our ride, in 56 miles.

      June 9, 2013

    • Julianne

GG bridge back was indeed crazy...glad I wasn't thrown over the edge! Wow! Did those fancy gadgets record the climate challenges we encountered? I saw 93 degrees but low was probably 40-something with winds of 30 something...who knows. Remarkably, I feel fine! Thanks for guiding an awesome ride and let me know if you lead another. All the best, jules

I needed to hurry up with the ride and get back home so I didn't wait. Sorry. Hope you all made it over the hill. An earlier start would've made a world of difference, next te perhaps.

No problem. Christine you are fast no question.

Hello Everyone, hope to see you tomorrow. If you are planning to join the 7am group but run late, so you know our first stop will be Mike's bike in Sausalito at 8:40am. Or you can wait at the bridge and ride with the 8am group. Gather around the first bench and look for Ryan.

You are already fast Warren. Hopefully next ride we'll see it.

      June 5, 2013

    • Ryan L.

Aww, I was really looking forward to seeing that Calfee in person! You were plenty fast even on your commuter to hang with the 8am group still if you'd like :)

      June 5, 2013

  • Lillie Y.

I would go with 8am group as I drive from east bay. Anybody want to meet at Sports Basement?

    June 4, 2013

thanks ryan. Yes, I'll be meeting up with the 7 am group :)

      June 5, 2013

    • Lillie Y.

8am is the earliest time I can make. Esther, I see you on the road then. Ryan, I will do my best to be fast and stay with the group.

      2 · June 5, 2013

  • Lillie Y.

Who is leading the 8am group?

    June 5, 2013

  • Peter

Hello everyone, I am considering taking slow riders and get a head start at 8am. Is there anyone who would be interested. Otherwise, what happens is the slow riders will end up completing the last part of the ride by themselves. Perhaps this way, the fast group can catch up as the slow group is nearing the end of the climb. We all can then finish the ride together.

    June 2, 2013

    • Yingpeng X.

7am would be the roll out time?

      June 4, 2013

    • Peter

yes Peng. see you at 7.

      June 4, 2013

  • Peter

Hello again, I am very concerned about the temperature prediction for this Saturday and am wondering if changing the start time to 7am for the slow group and 8am for the regular group would be more appropriate. Would this still work for most. If 7am is too early, I suppose we can all just leave as one group at 8am.

    1 · June 3, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Don. Hope you change your mind and join us.

Hi, Peter are we going to leave at 7am or 8am.

What is the rating of this ride? I'm getting a little nervous. How tough is it? Does anyone know the elevation? I'm from the South Bay, so I don't know the North Bay area.

    June 4, 2013

Esther, please check out the route sheet above. It has elevation profile.

Funny; during the last Paradise Loop ride, another group set out for Alpine Dam, at the same time. Thinking we were all the same group, I wound up with them. 7 Sisters was hot! Would be up for starting earlier.

    • Peter

      Great- See you Sueli.

      June 3, 2013

  • Peter

OK, looks like there will be 2 departure times. The 8am group so far will be Peter,Mike,Warren, Aubrey? and Amy (in Sausalito). I am going to ask Moraya if she can lead the 9:30am group. She is faster than me and is familiar with the route. The 2nd group should catch up with me on the climb since I am very slow.

    June 2, 2013

    • Peter

If possible, I would like to have both group meet at Rocksping so we all can descend together.

      June 2, 2013

    • Ryan L.

I will be in the later group and know the route now as well. I don't think you're so slow that we'll catch you with a 1.5 hr gap; maybe the second group should leave at 9am instead of 9:30?

      June 3, 2013

  • sueli l.

Im always looking to have fun ride and meet nice, fun, friendly people.

    June 2, 2013

  • Vanee

Hi, is this ride and group suitable for beginner road cyclists...? I've had a mountain bike with slick tires for years and I've done this route before in the other direction...and reallly slowly. Thanks!

    June 2, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Vanee. You should come. You just ride at your pace. There will be both fast and slow riders. We will regroup every so often.

      June 2, 2013

    • Vanee

Great, thanks for the encouragement, Peter!

      June 2, 2013

  • Mike

I second that on the heat (plus the traffic all around...). I'd vote to at least start the same time we did last week at 8am (or even a bit earlier, like 7?)

    June 2, 2013

  • Amy B.

I am up for leaving as early as everyone wants to leave. I did a metric century today and there was exposed segments - it was hot and it got difficult with the heat.
Peter - I will meet you guys at Mikes Bikes in sausalito. Going to meet friends for dinner in Marin after our ride so need my car over there. See you guys on Saturday.

    June 2, 2013

  • aubrey

Me, too., if I end up going again this week :) yesterday my gauge said I went from 57f to 97f. That's a 40 degree fluctuation, people! Even at 10am, it was hot. And the segment leading to the dam was very exposed. just sayin'.

    June 2, 2013

  • Peter

Would 8am start time work better? This ride can be repeated.

    May 25, 2013

    • Ryan L.

How about splitting the difference and saying 8:45 meet time, roll at 9am?

      May 31, 2013

    • Warren S.

8 am for yesterday's Alpine 101 was just about perfect.

      June 2, 2013

What's the intended pace for this ride and about when are we gonna be done?
