Alpine Dam Loop

To everyone who has signed up-- Welcome. So you have read the description and comments. You are OK with the climb. You know which group you are starting with. Next step for you is to show up at the meet-up time. If you have never done this route, enjoy the ride knowing that it will be a workout. Hope to see everyone tomorrow!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This ride is to do alpine dam loop in the counterclockwise direction. There will be 2 groups: slow & slightly faster. 60 miles with climbings and descendings. Beautiful non-boring ride.

Route will be: GG Bridge, Sausalito, Camino Alto, Fairfax, Alpine dam (lunch), Seven sisters, Rockspring, Pantoll Ranger Station, 4 corners, Hwy 1, Sausalito, GG bridge.

If you have never done this ride, you should do it at least once. http://www.yelp.com/biz/alpine-dam-bike-ride-fairfax

There will be 2 groups: 8AM regular group led by Ryan and early 6:30AM group led by Peter. The 6:30AM group is for slower riders (avg 10-11 mph) and is no drop. The 8AM is for slightly faster/regular riders and is a drop ride. Both groups meet at GG bridge for the start and will probably meet again between Alpine dam and Pan toll ranger station. Gather around by the first concrete bench and be ready to leave at 15mins after the hour. If you need parking info, see below. Please consider the climbing before RSVP. And please indicate if you plan to join the early group so we can look for you.

Absolutely amazing ride! Thanks to peter for organising! Absolutely amazing experience, looking forward to riding with you guys again.

Ok, classic case of be careful what you wish for... so I'd mentioned that the ride was easier than expected. That was before I took a left instead of a right (I presume) from bathroom/water station before the long decent (was chatting with a guy and when I looked up everyone was gone). I wound up at Stinson Beach and had to ride Hiway 1 back into Mill Valley. LOTS of climbing! Hamstrings started cramping in Sausalito but made it back to the parking lot by 2:40pm. Great ride, plenty of exercise :-) and a great group of people.

So, was I right? Did you guys go down the other side of the grade?

+1 On the 8AM group, hopefully I can keep up, understand it's a drop ride though, so if I can't, c'est la vie.

If that was Roger (don't think i ever caught his name) with the old 70's bike that weighed 2 tons...that guy is an animal. Flying up the hills, as was everyone today. I took the leisurely approach! :-)

Roger, I hope to meet you one day. Forget riding with you. Just meet. : ) Do you do 7 Hells of SF ride?

I might be able to make it tomorrow. Seems 8am group riders are very strong. Is it 5 mins drop or 10mins? Do you have a route map or cue sheet? I am not comfortable with the traffic and could be a bit slow.

Watching the Tour, yesterday's time trial, the commentator said one of the riders hit 56 MPH! Sorry but that is not possible. When I raced or trained I never hit that speed going down the steepest hill in Marin. I did hit a speed of 61.5 mph for 1 second motor pacing, it felt like my bike was going to shatter in pieces! 56MPH! NO WAY, new generation of ergogenic aids. Oh well, that's what the fans want.

Hi- where exactly is the first concrete bench? Any additional guidance would be helpful on this.. I've ridden across the bridge several times but don't quite recall benches anywhere along the way.

Also trying to decide between the 7am and 8am group... I don't want to stop too much, but do climb slowly. I have a road bike, and the longest ride I've done is 50 miles so far (paradise loop from my apartment), stopping about twice. Thoughts? Thanks!

    July 10, 2013

    • Ryan L.

Also, it sounds like you'd be up for the 8am group. Slow and steady on the climbs is fine, as long as you can make it up most of them in one go without a 5 minute break :)

      July 10, 2013

    • Peter

Emily. By the way, the early group meets at 6:30am and we will most likely be the only group gathering so it will also be obvious.

      July 10, 2013

  • Loi L.

Hello everyone. I just joined meetup and this group. I want to do this ride, but not sure if I can handle the climb. I haven't rode a whole lot, but I've done 20-30 mile rides around SF, mostly flat averaging 15 mphs. Do you think this is too much? How long is the stretch of climb, are there any stops?

    July 10, 2013

    • Ryan L.

Loi, it sounds like you might want to work up to this ride more slowly, and get at least a 40-50 mile ride under your belt first, with a few climbs. There is a LOT of climbing on this route (it does go up Mt Tam...!) Especially since it's going to be pretty hot out, which will make it even more challenging, and we don't want to see anyone suffering badly or not make it.

      July 10, 2013

  • James C.

Hello, Love the looks of this ride, I will be visiting the San Fan area July 21 to the 28th. At this point it looks like I should have at least Mon, Tues, and Wed of that week to ride. The map above makes the route look easy to follow, however looking at a map makes me think it may be difficult to navigate. Would anyone be interested in doing this loop on the 23/'24th of July. If anyone knows of a Bigger climb in the area, or a must do ride I would appreciate the info. Thanks James

Thank you very much Joi, I am going to be limited on the days I have to ride. Not sure if i will be able to get away on the Sat, but here for hoping.

      July 10, 2013

  • Joi

Hmmm, trying to decide which time. I'm a bit slow-and-steady climbing, but I also don't want to stop too many times, as that messes me up. I did this route before about 2 months ago. It was awesome.

    July 9, 2013

    • Ryan L.

Sounds like you'd definitely be comfortable in the 8am group, if you've done the route before and don't feel the need to stop too often!

      July 9, 2013

  • Kate M.

Hey all, I have never done a long ride like this. The longest I've ever done is a 30 mile ride. I am wondering if this is pushing it for a newbie? I'd love some feedback on this.

    July 5, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Kate. Is that 30 miles flat or hills? I must say this is not an easy ride. We are climbing up a mountain after all. However, you can ride to Fairfax and decide.

      July 5, 2013

    • Joi

Kate, to alpine dam, it's pretty much 3 miles of continuous climbing. Then there's more and more climbing until you're past 7 sisters.

      July 9, 2013

  • Don W.

Looks like I'm in. A little concerned about being in the 8am group, but, can't make it earlier due to BART schedule.
All that said, I AM looking forward to it!

    July 8, 2013

    • Don W.

First, thanks for your reply. The part that drives me nuts is the improper use of the word Less when the word Fewer is the proper modifier.

"The 8am group is just regular riding with less stops"

Less and fewer are easy to mix up. They mean the same thing—the opposite of more—but you use them in different circumstances (1). The basic rule is that you use less with mass nouns and fewer with count nouns.

So, since you can count the number of stops that will take place, the proper sentence would be "The 8am group is just regular riding with FEWER stops"

Thanks for indulging my soapbox on this topic. From my observation, the upcoming generation uses the word LESS for everything...for some reason it just hurts my ears/eyes. Yeah, I know. Overkill on my part. But that's what old guys do! :-)

Hi! Any ideas of just how fast the "faster" second group is? Is everyone in both groups road bikes?

    July 3, 2013

    • Ryan L.

I just looked at data from the last time I led this ride, and the "faster" group was just under 13mph average. Of course that includes a lot of very steady, slow climbing so the average on flats is higher; but we still wait at the tops of hills as needed, no one is hammering up them.

      July 5, 2013

    • Ryan L.

And here is a log of that ride I mentioned, so you can judge for yourself: http://app.strava.com... -- it sounds like you will be totally fine in the 8am group, it's nothing crazy :)
