Circle The City

Ever ridden all the way around San Francisco? Here's your chance.

Details: ~33 miles, ~2400 feet climb

See a map of the route here.

Our pace will be moderate, 12-14 MPH with regrouping at the top of hills and cross-streets. The ride will probably take 4-5 hours, with rest/lunch stops. If anyone poops out, Daly City BART is at mile 17.

We'll start at the Ferry Building Clock Tower, then Circle the City in a counter-clockwise direction--this should get us through the touristy areas before most people show up.

Landmarks include:

  • The Golden Gate Bridge
  • Lands End and Sutro Baths
  • "Lunch" stop at Ocean Beach (at the end of Sloat, near the Zoo, and we can just eat on the bluff over the beach if we don't want to get sand in our chains).
  • Lake Merced
  • 6400 Mission Street, "Top of the Hill" Daly City (a shrine to marketing in the 70's and 80's)
  • The backside of San Bruno mountain
  • Candlestick Park
  • Telephone Park (Pac Bell, AT&T, whatever they're calling it these days).

Go Bike It -- apprx, $8/hr ($27/day)

It was a lot of fun riding around the city, you sure see thing differently from a bike. I enjoyed the route and meeting lots of friendly people for the first time. Thanks all and especially to Franny for her organization.

Thanks for coming out to ride everyone. The weather was perfect for this. We had quite a large cohesive group until the end. I hope the route sheets along with your GPS helped some of you complete the ride. We had to stick to the 10-15 min max waiting period as posted on the event. To cap it off, some of us went to Pier 23's beer garden. Highly recommended! Hope to see you on a future ride!

    Hi Cyclists,

I'm looking forward to circumnavigating SF with you, hitting some major points and hills!

This is going to be a big ride with over 40 people. As much as I like to try and keep it cohesive, it is INEVITABLE that some of us will get split up. Pace, traffic lights, etc. But I wanted to be all inclusive and let anyone who was interested join in. I will wait 10 min. at the top of hills and intersections.

I am bringing 40 cue sheets to distribute at the start. Please find yourself a riding buddy to stick with, so that if you get "lost," you can help each other find your way.

We will ACTUALLY BE STOPPING FOR LUNCH AT THE WESTLAKE CENTER off John Daly, Blvd., MEETING AT STARBUCKS HERE:

But will will stop at the points as marked on the event map:

This is the final e-mail. See you tomorrow at the Ferry Building! I have an orange bike.

Well, if there are 2 on the wait list it's your lucky day. Our storage was broken into this morning and our road bikes are gone:(.
I hope this ride is repeated!

    • Franny

Oh, I'm so sorry, Melody. That's a horrible feeling. We'll do it again.

    • Anthony

OMG!So sorry this happened to you two.

  • Kimberly

Hello - should we plan to bring lunch, or will there be an easy place to purchase it near Ocean Beach?

    July 24, 2013

    • Kimberly

      Thanks, Franny!

      July 25, 2013

    • Franny

Hi Kimberly, so we're actually going to do our lunch stop at Westlake Center where they have EVERYTHING. Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Trader Joes, etc. to cater to everyone's needs mid-ride. I think this is a good idea for anyone low on gatorade. We'll have a snack break somewhere at the beach, though.

This will be my first road ride meet up, looking forward to it very much.

Hi Cyclists, this is going to be a well-attended "epic" ride, with several meetups joining. I want everyone to have the route sheet (print it or put it in your phone) in case we get separated. In fact, for those who do wish to whizz through, the map will help. This is a no-drop ride in the sense that I intend to wait 10 min. at the top of each hill or intersection for everyone to catch up. We will take longer breaks at points of interest as noted on the map:

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1985087

The first stop will be a catch up snack/coffee break on the Golden Gate Bridge Plaza where there are restrooms.

See you Saturday. Contact me me at[masked] with any questions.

Is this a road bike only event?

    July 21, 2013

    • Franny

Hi Peter, It is all on roads and a road bike is highly recommended unless you can move pretty quickly on a heavier mountain bike. But don't let that discourage you. I understand there are reasonable bike rental shops in SF.
