Around San Francisco Bay in a Day!

Circumnavigate San Francisco Bay in a Day - 100% by bicycle - no public transit! A truly epic adventure!

We attempted this on July 14 but stayed up way too late the night before at a bike party so we didn't make it. This is Summer Attempt #2.

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2830374

We rode this once before - on Dec 28, 2012. Route is designed to minimize headwinds and hills and maximize scenic views. The link above shows a San Jose start but feel free to join us (and bail) anywhere along the route.

Lunch is at Front Room at the Wharf, 295 Mare Island Way, Vallejo, which is 100 miles into the ride for those starting in San Jose, 50 miles in for those starting in San Francisco.

Start Locations and Times:
San Jose Caltrain Station: 5:00 am
Palo Alto Lytton Plaza: 6:15 am
San Francisco Ferry Building: 9:00 am

This is a long ride - be prepared. Plenty of food and water. Moderate pace - expect to cruise at about 15 mph on flats.

We didn't carry a lot of stuff last time. You just need food, water, and tools.

Also I'm not an experienced rider, do you think I would make it all the way ?

    July 25, 2013

Hayden, another idea is to start in San Francisco at 9 am ride with us to Oakland. That's 80 miles. San Jose to Oakland is 130 miles. Between SF and Oakland, there's no easy way to bail.

I think I should be ok

This ride IS HAPPENING. Get to bed early Friday night if you're riding! Also, please let me know where you plan on joining the ride, so we know to look for you. Please email or text me your phone numbers in case we have any problems meeting up. [masked],[masked]-8954. See you!

are you going to use gps for the route? no drop?

    July 28, 2013

I would definitely need gps cuz I live in Sacramento and would be making the drive. Problem with Garmin Edge is the battery life is limited to like 12 hrs. So we need to ride faster to get my Strava registered. I'm joking. The solution would be to connect an axillary battery. Where are you planning to stop to "smell the roses" Andrew?

We'll stop roughly every 1.5 hours or so. The long stop for lunch is at Front Room on the Wharf in Vallejo.

Does 15 hrs seam correct based on a 15 mph avg pace and a total of 2 hrs of breaks? Never done a double but many rides over 100. This one is relatively flat.

Woops didn't see the discussion down below

It will definitely take more than 15 hours. Last time it took 18 hours and that was going pretty fast without any headwinds.

thought we'd be taking Caltrain to SF

    July 25, 2013

    • Andrew B.

I can delay the SF start time to 9:45 am so that Caltrain use is possible, but you have to promise to show up in that case.
