Embarcadero BART to Marin's finest: metric century loop

Living in the east bay and haven't explored SF or Marin enough yet? Live in SF and wanting to see all the great riding right here in your backyard? This is the ride for you!

We'll meet at 8:45 in front of the Ferry Building (1 Sausalito, San Francisco, CA 94111). Wheels rolling at 9am sharp, for a mostly flat warmup ride to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Route Map: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/266206053

102km (63 miles), with approx 3200 feet of climbing. A few steep spots, but mainly sustained moderate elevation gains. You should be an intermediate level rider for this one, comfortable on longer rides and sustained climbs. We'll happily wait for 10 minutes at the tops of all the larger hills to regroup. Remember to be prepared, with water, lytes, a spare tube, and snacks to keep you going.

Riders from north/west SF are welcome to join up at the bridge at ~9:30am. Wait by the viewing area to the side of the bike path, almost directly under the bridge, before it heads up the little switchbacks onto the bridge itself.

Once over the bridge, we'll head up the famous Conzelman Road (Hawk Hill) to an expansive view of the bridge and the bay from above (fog-permitting). Down an exhilarating descent along the coast past the old Nike missile sites. Back up again on a well-paved and less-travelled switchback called McCullough. Down again via East Drive to Sausalito. A respite along the serene (and flat) Sausalito bike path to Mill Valley, before heading up the next classic climb: Camino Alto.

Descending down the north side of Camino Alto into Corte Madera brings us to the classic Paradise loop -- lots of flowy rollers and impressive bay views. This is many people's favorite loop for a reason.

Back to SF from Paradise via Strawberry and Seminary. Back over the bridge, this time heading west through the Presidio into a final SF mini-loop. Down through Seacliff past China Beach, then up the last significant climb of the day to Legion of Honor. Down the last thrilling descent past the golf course, exposing impressive views of the ocean from Lands End. Down past Cliff House and into Golden Gate Park. All the way across SF, via classic "wiggle" commute lanes, jigging and jagging back to Market from the Panhandle, bringing us back to Embarcadero BART at last.

There will be quick restroom / café / mechanical stops at Mike's Bikes in Sausalito, both times we pass by. Around mile 20, and again around mile 45. No planned stops on last SF mini-loop, but there are a couple places along route to refill water if needed.

There is a nice bail-out option in Sausalito, either after Hawk Hill or before the final SF mini-loop. The ferry there runs frequently and heads straight back to the Ferry Building meetup spot in SF. You can also head straight back to the Ferry Building by going east after the bridge instead of west with us for the SF mini-loop, to cut off about 10 miles and one large hill.

Absolutely beautiful and dramatic ride! I loved watching the fog rush over the bridge and hearing the foghorns for added effect. Terrific group of people and most gracious host. Thanks, Ry!

Excellent day with an excellent group of people. I'm really happy everyone rode so well, it was such a cohesive and fun ride. Hope to see you all again on another ride soon!

Here's my Strava data for those who were interested; this includes the entire metric century loop plus some extra to/from my apartment and the starting point. Subtracting that, it was right on point with the original MapMyRide estimate: http://www.strava.com/activities/75768014
