In the future on rides like this you need to have a lead rider who will stop at every turn and make sure the group makes those turns and a sweep rider to make sure every one in the group is accounted for.
This ride took way too long because we got separated and people missed turns. Otherwise the route was great and I enjoyed everyone's company.

I agree with Robert...sort of. This was my first ride since joining the group, so I didn't know anybody's skill level. I was comfortable with the route because I've ridden most of it before. But this was an advanced ride in distance and difficulty. The ride description said "feel free to join/leave the group at anytime". But I think 1) the exact route should have been put out from the beginning, and 2) there should have been a disclaimer about people of similar abilities staying together.

I completely agree with Bob and Scott!!!!! I tried my hardest to nail down the route via a google map before we rode with no luck getting a concrete response. These rides especially the biggies like this one can't just be winging it. There are too many skill levels, safety factors, etc in this sport that we need to be well organized when we're out on the road. Thankfully I wasn't lost just slow up the climb after overshooting the turn onto Tunitas. I was rushing as much as I could to get there before you guys took off. I really appreciate you all waiting for me in Woodside.

Amy and leland - we think you missed the turn off to tunitas creek road. The turn is 1-2 miles south of where we stopped as a bigger group. The bike hut is at portrero nuevo farm. We just got to woodside. So sorry we lost u guys - we didnt have any cell reception

I live just off the route in Pacifica (about mile 12). I will try to intercept the group somewhere near the end of Palmetto near the golf course. Look for me: black Cannondale, red helmet. That should be around 9:15 or so if you leave on time?

For those not familiar with Tunitas Creek Rd, there is a communal rest stop called the Bike Hut (about mile 37). The Bike Hut is self-service, and it has snacks, water, bike tools, etc. Small bills are appreciated.
It's a nice break before the tough climb to Skyline.

Scott... nice video thru the tunnel! Thanks. Looks plenty safe. Especially with tail lighting as you said.

I just called the San Mateo County Sheriff's office in HMB. They confirmed the tunnel is clear for bicycle traffic. I've ridden through it before on a big event, but we had CHP escort.
Just be aware that there could be heavier than usual traffic along Hwy 1 this weekend because of the high surf attraction.
The SMSO also said the new Devil's Slide alternate trail is open sporadically; the official opening will be in a couple months.

Riding through the tunnel does not worry me. The climb up to get to the tunnel does. I have not done that part before.

The climb to the tunnel is about a mile long. There is a highway sign that says 'Bike Route' but there is no shoulder. Turn on your tail lights. http://app.strava.com...

I would like to join the ride in Pacifica before you head toward HMB. Can you can post the route so I can pick the best spot to meet up?

    January 22, 2014

    • Don

Peter... your MapMyRide route looks like you're planning on riding Northbound on Skyline Blvd just west of Hwy 280. Is that your plan? I thought you were planning on riding Northbound via the Bay Trail which is mostly a bike path along the bayshore... on the western boundary of Redwood Shores, Foster City, and eastern boundary of San Mateo next to the water.

      January 23, 2014

    • Peter

Correct. Not taking the skyline but rather the flat bay trails.

      January 24, 2014

  • Robert W.

Approximately how many miles will the ride be?

    January 21, 2014

    • Peter

I think this will be about 90-95 miles range.

      January 21, 2014

    • Don

Robert... in a pinch, you can do about half the route... get back to the peninsula from the coast... and take CalTrain back to SF. That would be roughly 55 miles... maybe 60.

      January 23, 2014

  • Don

    Hi Peter,
I'm planning on the ride but I will be bypassing the old abandoned route, somehow, and then re-connect with the group further south.

    January 21, 2014

    • Aaron M.

Don, what's wrong with the old HWY? Rough pavement?

      January 23, 2014

    • Don

Hi Aaron..... there is an old Hwy 1 that runs behind (east) of Pacifica which was abandoned somewhere back about 1940? and people use it to ride and hike past the devils slide area of current Hwy 1 on the coast. But its best for mt bike and not road bikes.

      January 23, 2014

  • Don

Peter..... I did half of this route from SF to south of HMB & then over to Redwood City via the coastal hills where we caught the CalTrain back to SF. That was about 52 miles of riding.

But we went over an old section of highway long abandoned in the coastal hills as the first step in heading south. Is that your plan or is the new tunnel allowing bike riders?

Hello Everyone, I am back from an overseas trip. The ride is still on for this Sat. Amy, let me see if I can make a map. However, I am sure you will have no problem with the ride.

We live in San Mateo - is there any way we can meet you in Half Moon Bay or elsewhere for a halfway route?

    January 13, 2014

    • Peter

Yes, we can meet in HMB. However I am unsure of the time. Email me and I can provide you with my cell number.

      January 20, 2014

  • Jean

I'll ride with you guys down to Redwood City.

    January 5, 2014

    • Jean

I'm going to go with other East Bay group.

      January 14, 2014

  • Amy

Hey Peter - can you provide a map/directions of this route? Thanks!
