SF-Santa Cruz-SF

This is a slow pace long distance ride. We will ride from SF and follow mostly along HWY 1 south to Santa Cruz. After lunch at a suitable location, we ride back. You must be self-sufficient (tube/pump/food/water/money/phone,etc.). This ride is about 150 miles. Rain cancels. (will be rescheduled). Minimum of 3 riders to hold. This a small group ride for people looking for a challenge, not a race or personal training ride. If you have been on my rides before, you know I don't ride fast.

It should be dark before we arrive back in SF.  Make sure you have working front  and rear lights.

Hello to everyone who is coming to this ride, please be at the meeting point and ready to ride at 6:30am. We will not wait long. If you miss the group somehow, start riding and you should be able to catch up. It is a long ride. See you all.

Sorry, I won't be able to make it. Hopefully this ride happens again soon.

I'll be in the area from the end of May until mid June. I hope this ride will take place again around that time. Have fun!

Hi Peter, I've decided to give this a miss and do a 100-mile ride in the East Bay instead. Ride with ya next time! ride safe! ;)

Hi I can't come now so someone can take my spot. Sorry Cornelia

Is this ride too hilly for my 3 speed ride? I just moved to SF from NYC and I know I need to get some more gears ASAP...but I'd love to come on this ride if it is doable with 3 speeds.

    April 2, 2014

    • kplay

Thank you. Looking at some of the rides I did in NY...looks like I can do this ride. It will be challenging...but doable.

I'm thinking I might join you to half moon bay and then turn back. I'll see how I feel.

      April 4, 2014

  • Arjun

Peter, I'd love to join, but the earliest BART from Oakland (MacArthur) arrives at Civic Center around 6:36am... so probably couldn't get to Cal Academy until 6:50.

Is anyone driving a car from the East Bay and willing to pick me up? :-D

    April 3, 2014

    • Peter

Great. Also actually the route is quite very simple. If you are late, just follow Hwy 1 south and soon you will catch up and pass me.

I'm there for the group ride

Peter, I am under the weather and not feeling confident I'll be healthy enough by Saturday. Super bummed. Have a great trip. I hope to catch your next ride.

Hope to see you on another ride Kristin.

All, I increased RSVP to 12 but with some expected no-shows, hopefully we will have a group of 8. I think we are clear to go with no rain expected. Please be prepared. If you are on Strava, make sure to claim your frequent flyer miles.

Really excited about this ride, Peter - am looking forward to it. If I ride an average speed of 14 mph, will that be a problem?

    April 2, 2014

    • Peter

Avg of 14mph is perfectly good. My avg is about 12.

      April 2, 2014

  • Tina S.

Could I join you from HMB to SC to HMB?
    Thanks,
    Tina

Hi Tina, it may be hard to time our arrival there but if you can hook up with us then sure.

Peter! You are an animal!! All these long rides - you super extreme athlete you! Given the stupid time change, and 6:30 a.m. is really 5:30 a.m. - I don't think I can make this fun-sounding ride. have fun!!

    March 30, 2014

    • Peter

Hey Eva. I wouldn't call myself an extreme athlete at all. Far from it. I am not even sure of this one but let's give it a shot.

Peter I still hope to do this with you someday alas I can't next Saturday

I'm not ready for that distance. I'll decide soon if I want to do a portion of the route.

Hello Peter- I would so enjoy joining this ride but I am already committed for Saturday. Hopefully you will be scheduling another ride along this route again in the near future. Are long wheel based recumbents welcomed on these rides?

    March 26, 2014

    • Peter

Of course. But I have never seen a slow recumbents though : )

      March 26, 2014

    • Paul F

Well considering that I am still a fairly new recumbent rider and have not yet ridden any long rides (more than 50 miles), I am expecting that I may be a bit slower than those that you have ridden with, but 12+ sounds like it is very doable.

      March 26, 2014

  • Peter

I am not sure how many will eventually come but I would like to limit the group to 8. I am looking for a small group that will together for the entire route. You can be fast but you must be able to ride (tolerate) with slow riders.

    March 26, 2014

  • Anton P.

Is it possible for me to join somewhere in South Bay? 150 miles is too long for me. Do you have the whole route planed out?

    March 26, 2014

    • Peter

It may be hard to time where we will be since many things can happen. We will just follow Hwy 1 south until we reach the destination or until we decide it is time to turn around.

      March 26, 2014

  • Kristin S.

i am super interested in doing this ride. I'm mostly a noob and never ridden this far before, but want to build my touring legs. long and slow seems like the perfect answer. if i join, i'll likely bike with the group one way and stay in SC.

    March 24, 2014

    • Peter

Kristin, if you are looking for a slow group. This is it. I think among the people who post rides, I am the slowest. I have not done this ride or ridden this far. Give it a shot.

      1 · March 24, 2014

    • Kristin S.

      Peter, I think I will! :)

      March 26, 2014

Interested in this as well, but can't do that particular Saturday, would love to go if rescheduled.

    March 22, 2014

  • Daren

Too bad I work Saturdays... sounds like an awesome ride!

    March 13, 2014

  • Brian S.

interesting ride, long and slow. i would like to try that, its something i have never done. one question, at say 12MPH average, thats 12.5 hours of riding time, is it possible to make it back by sunset, i guess so. what do you expect the average speed to be?

    March 13, 2014

    • Peter

Hi Brian, I am hoping the avg over the entire 150 miles trip would be no less than 12mph but not much higher if at all. I expect it would be dark/night time when we arrive back in SF.

      1 · March 13, 2014

    • Don

Be sure to have lighting with you Brian. At least a head lamp if not a bike headlight and tail light.

      March 13, 2014

  • Matt

I may only bike 1 way and stay down in SC.

    March 13, 2014

  • stuart b.

Peter is back. Wish I could attempt it but i'll be on a ride out of town that weekend . Next time.

    March 13, 2014

  • Don

Peter... I would have been interested in this except for the dates. If you reschedule, alert me in advance.
