Easiest Century Ever

Where: San Jose City Hall (Santa Clara St & 4th St)
When: Sunday, July 27 at 9:00 am

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5403461

San Jose - San Mateo - San Jose - Beat the Heat (a small, one-stop bike party ride in SJ that ends at City Hall) The route linked to above is 85 miles - Beat the Heat adds 15 miles more to make it 100.

We can almost say "No Rider Left Behind" for this and we will try very hard not to drop anybody. But it's 100 miles - we have to move at a reasonable pace - at the very minimum 12 mph while cruising and hopefully a little faster - we have all day to do this but expect to take many stops.

This bike party style ride will cover the easiest 100 Miles you'll ever spend bicycling in a single day. We'll take advantage of:

- flat roads
- tailwinds
- all pavement
- lots of rest stops ("picnic stops")
- plenty of places to get water & food
- scenic views of the San Francisco Bay
- an evening bike party ride (Beat the Heat)
- pie (still not classified as doping by the UCI)

100 miles could not possibly get any easier than this!

Yes it is forecast to be hot (high of 80 - 85 deg F) but during most of the worst afternoon heat we'll be along the cooler Bay Trail...

Rules of the Road for cyclists in California from The American Bicyclists League listing of State Bike Laws - http://bikeleague.org/content/state-bike-laws-0

#California requires that a bicyclist, traveling at a speed less than the speed of traffic, must ride as far to the right as practicable. However, the law provides for exceptions to this requirement under any of the following situations:

When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.

When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.

When reasonably necessary to avoid unsafe conditions subject to the provisions requiring a slow-moving vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in line, to turn off a roadway in order to permit the vehicles following it to proceed. Unsafe conditions include any lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

The organizer's insistence that his riding the center yellow line on narrow two-lane roads and taking over entire residential streets is "safe riding" procedure was dangerous, irresponsible, and inconsiderate of the concerns expressed by at least 6 riders in the group. Bike Party rides may work somewhere, but more than anything else, it just pisses off motorists and gives cyclists a bad name and at danger in the future.
