Bicycle mechanic 101

WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET MORE THAN 20 INTO THIS SESSION. IF NOT WE WILL REPEAT IT IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS. WATCH THIS SPACE..

This free class is led by an expert mechanic at Sports Basement. It's a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow BAC Meetup members off the bike and at the same time acquire mechanical skills that will be invaluable both at home before a ride, and when you are 5 miles from anywhere with a broken bike and a group of riders that doesn't know how to fix it.

Subjects covered:
- Pumping up your tire - valve and pump types and how to use them.
- Fixing a flat!
- Tools you should carry on every ride.
- Fixing a taco'd wheel so you can ride home.
- Oh Snap! Chain breakages.
- Lube and cleaning
- Essential pre-ride checks (rattle test, wheels, tires, brakes, chain lube, shifting)

The presenter was knowledgable, friendly, and open to addressing our requests. Paul supplemented based on his extensive experience biking.

The session was good. It is the first time we have done this, so it could still use some tweaking, but Thaison is a very knowledgeable mechanic and a friendly teacher. What's with all the no-shows though? Flakiness is selfish and very uncool b/c it deprives others of the opportunity.

I learned a lot. Good refresher for changing a bike tire.

Hi Paul - any chance of having one at the Walnut Creek SB? Thanks.

    • Paul

Possibly. It depends on how many people would show up for it.

Hi Paul - How long is the class?

    • Paul

Hi Karolina, it will run 60-90 minutes, but if you need to leave early that would be fine.

Hi Paul. I'm not sure how many will show up to Sport Basement in Sunnyvale but seeing that this event is on a weekday, I would not be able to make it and miss out. However, if there was one in the Sunnyvale location, I would definitely attend. Perhaps, start a thread on the discussion board to gauge how many are interested for future Bicycle Mechanic 101?

I think bikes aren't needed but will check with Sports Basement and post a comment.

Hi Kevin, I can work with Sports Basement in Sunnyvale to set one up. How many people do you think would go?
