New Meetup: China Camp - Volunteer MTB Group to Support More MTB Trail Access‏

Announcing a new Meetup for Bay Area Cycling (Mountain & Road)!

What: China Camp - Volunteer MTB Group to Support More MTB Trail Access‏

When: June 20,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

I want to tell you about an IMBA supported volunteer MTB group that is currently working with the CA State Parks/Open Spaces to promote safe and equitable trail access for all shared-trail users...There are currently four CA State Park trails being considered for bike access: Bill's Trail, Samuel P. Taylor Park (just opened to bikes and "in trial period"), Easy Grade (Mt. Tam), McKennan (Mt. Tam, off of Ridgecrest) and Olompali (Mt. Burdell). To ensure safe and equitable shared trail use once these trails are open to bikes, CA State Parks has asked, in return, for help in managing the trails.

Our volunteer group is on a "goodwill mission". We hope to convince other users (including mountain bikers) that mountain bikers can coexist with hikers/equestrians equitably and safely. Basically, we ride shared-use trails in pairs as "goodwill ambassadors" and create a positive MTB presence, i.e. practice courteous trail etiquette, help out other trail users(mainly helping out with directions or just listening to concerns, help with communication/ act as eyes and ears to rangers; no enforcement, no first aid, although many of us are First Aid/CPR/First Responder certified).

We currently ride at China Camp and Coastal Trail on Mt. Tam, usually on weekends for 4 hour shifts, i.e. a.m. or p.m. Shift times are flexible and you decide with your partner, when and where you will ride...All members are very cool and good natured. Many are avid bike advocates and volunteer in other capacities. If you are interested in meeting other good natured riders and helping to open other trails to MTB access, please check out our group!

We are having an "orientation ride" this Saturday, June 20, at China Camp. The group will meet at the Bull's Head Ranger Station at 11 a.m. for a ride during which you can learn about our group. Afterward, if you are interested, you can attend a CA State Park Volunteer orientation to learn more.

If you are interested, you can e-mail Miki at [address removed].

Thanks and see you on the trails!
