Dell: How to make Social Media work for your business.

This location is shown only to members

Computer maker Dell has earned a reputation in recent years of being one of the organizations most engaged online with customers, influencers, and anyone who has an interest in Dell and what they do.

Not only that, Dell say they actually make money as a direct result of their online engagement activities, notably in reporting multi-million-dollar revenue attributable to Dell’s outlet business on Twitter (@Delloutlet).

We'll hear about Dell’s strategic engagement activities online, the people at Dell online, Dell’s use of social media such as blogs and Twitter, making money with Twitter, experimenting with new ways to engage online with employees, and much more.

Presenters:
Richard Binhammer is a senior manager in corporate communications at Dell’s headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, USA. His career has developed from provincial and federal politics in Canada and (mostly) successful election campaigns, as well as lobbying, to corporate communications in the USA, with a little art, photography, good friends and different cities/regions to explore and enjoy along the way.

At Dell, Richard plans and implements strategic corporate communications to achieve business success and support/build corporate reputations. Most recently his responsibilities include new efforts in social media. He is experienced in positioning diverse business sectors, senior corporate executives, government officials and community leaders with key constituent groups, including extensive media relations and campaign/issues management.

Lionel Menchaca is a nearly 15-year Dell veteran and chief blogger at Direct2Dell, Dell's main corporate blog. Since launching the blog in July 2006, Lionel helped expand it into Chinese, Spanish Norwegian and Japanese and continues to work to further extend Dell's global presence. Before launching Dell's blog, Lionel was one of the main architects behind Dell's blog monitoring process begun in April 2006.

He works with a team within the company to coordinate activities and content across all of Dell's social media initiatives including the Dell Community Forum and IdeaStorm. These initiatives have one thing in common: to open direct lines of communication between Dell employees and their customers to improve the products and services Dell offers.

Lionel also serves as a technologist to help Dell define new software to monitor and engage in conversations in the blogosphere, and to facilitate collaboration among the Dell teams that respond to customer feedback. He's also been one of the principal leads in Dell's efforts to build communities using Web 2.0 tools like Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, Delicious and more to augment Dell sites like the recently-launched DigitalNomads.com.

An avid fan of computer hardware, gadgets and Web 2.0 technology, his early career included a stint at quality assurance and tech support for game developer Origin Systems and hardware and advanced operating systems technical support at Dell.

Lionel earned a degree in archaeological studies from University of Texas. He lives in Round Rock, Texas, with his wife, Aileen, and two children, Louis and Mia.

This was my first time attending one of Tatyana's meetups and it was just first rate. I had been wanting to learn more about how Dell has navigated, from Dell Hell to building one of the most highly regarded communities. Speakers Lionel Menchaca and Richard Binhammer from Dell were terrific. Thank you all the way around.

Truly one of the most insightful presentations yet. Richard Binhammer and Lionel Menchaca are clearly writing the book on how a large company should/could utilize social media to identify issues, defuse complaints, generate ideas from the user base and regain status for a brand. They have gone further than many in developing the metrics and ROI for social media, and in creating collaboration and referral processes that engage other teams in the company. Thanks again to Tatyana for offering great food for thought and, as usual, for the palate.
