Dinner at Haven in JLS Oakland

  • February 15, 2013 · 6:30 PM

A bunch of friends and I tried Haven the week they opened and we were blown away by the subtle mix of flavors, unique drinks and attentive customer service. Standouts from the chef's tasting menu were the amazing brussel sprouts, little gem salad, smoked pasta and shepherd's pie. It's time for the group to experience this new eatery that's breathing new life into the Jack London Square restaurant scene.

"Located in Oakland’s Jack London Square, Haven is the third restaurant from the Daniel Patterson Group (Plum in Oakland & Coi in SF). Serving new Californian cuisine from Executive Chef Kim Alter, the menu features craveable, technique-driven food including whole animal and vegetable preparations, shareable plates, and desserts-for-two from Pastry Chef Matt Tinder. The community-minded space evokes a sense of comfort and warmth while simultaneously providing a unique and personal dining experience including hand-crafted cocktails from the best local mixologists."

Event Details: In order to try as many dishes as possible, we'll order the chef's tasting menu which includes 3-4 appetizers and 4-5 entrees. The cost is $65 per person. Please carefully review the entire menu before RSVPing. If you have food allergies or are a discriminating diner, this event is probably not for you.

Tee, is the chef's tasting menu reserved for special groups only? Or could I arrange that with a reservation on my own? I couldn't make this meetup due to other plans, plus it filled up quick. Sounds scrumptious!

Hey Laura, the Chef's tasting menu is open to everyone. $60 for 4 courses, and they bring out a variety of dishes for each course. The larger your party the better b/c you'll get more food & larger portions.

What Mike said: swoon-worthy food, hysterical dinner guests and excellent service. Somewhat pricey but worth every penny for special occasions.

I remember the shepherd's pie was inventive but too salty. Everything else was great, however. We had a great time there the first time around and I would sign up again if I wasn't committed to something else. Have fun!

Funny, we had one dish that also had a too-salty element: lamb belly. But yes, overall it was excellent and we were all swooning over the food.
