Meetup...YOUR CHOICES!

Let's hear from everyone on the topics of this meetup. Dawn will have some things she may require from us, but I'm sure we would all want to know about something that applies to our journey. So with that in mind, I'd like to talk query. That's where I am. Where are you, and what do you want the group to make time for?

Allen and Paul are investigating the Southshore for this meeting. Venue will be determined at a later date.

Dog Days of Summer...boy tonight's meeting was HOT! Hopefully not just because it was 90 degrees at our table:-) We discussed a tremendous amount of material and there were handouts too! If you missed it or simply want the convenient electronic copy then click on over to DISCUSSIONS (link up above) then click on forum title WRITING A QUERY, SYNOPSIS, OR OUTLINE. From there you can choose from any of the three topics and will find the corresponding links. Tonight we also welcomed our newest member Sean Griffith. He is working feverishly (I swear it was hot!) on editing his first novel. Sean is relatively new to NOLA, has an inspiring story, and is a great addition to our Krewe!

Looking forward to our next meeting August 29!

Great to meet everyone tonight. It's encouraging to meet people working through and thinking about the same things. Lisa, thanks a million for the handouts.

Sorry about RSVPing ... didn't check the date. I thought it was NEXT Thursday. These notices come at the last minute sometimes! I'll try for the next one.

I'd love to know more about query writing - how to write the letter and picking agents to reach out to.

I'm curious of everyone's thoughts of blogs or just a regular website for an author. I have paulheingarten.com registered but have been debating between doing a blog or site. I've done blogs before and know the upkeep involved.

www.rebeccanietert.wordpress.com is mine. It's FREE! Also you can create tags simply meaning if you also use Twitter, Facebook and FB Blogger, Pintrest, Instagram etc....once you post on your blog it sends the same posts to the social media site. One stop posting kind of thing. Wordpress does blogs and has website templates. Good luck, and YES....huge fan of a blog. I read Lisa's a writer in our group and co-leader. You might want to talk with her more at the meetup.

Hey Paul, Lets talk about this tonight for sure. In the meantime, I recently started a blog (just a few months ago) and am quite proud of it although I cannot commit to more than one post a month until summer is over. If you have a chance, check it out at lisadherrington.blogspot.com

I posted the "Art of writing a great Query Letter" in discussions under agents today. I am very excited about the upcoming meeting. I also bought the 2013 guide to agents and publishers at B & N the other day. I will bring that 3 inch thick book with me. Again, look so forward to seeing Lisa take the lead and bring us info we may not know about on the art of pitching. :-) Take care,
    Rebecca

Yeah.....I don't think I'm going to make it. Today was harsher than I thought so have fun without me! :-( thank you for all you do. Thank all of you for understanding. Lisa, have you read my novel? I was so looking toward to that conversation?!

I am sorry to hear that it was so difficult. We will miss you tonight. I am actually about fifty pages from being done with your book and look forward to discussing it with you too! See you soon.

Not sure if I can make it, but I'll try. I'm down in that area a fair bit.

Thanks for the heads up Rebecca. Anyone else out there need to carpool? If so then let me know ASAP so we can meet at the Fresh Market parking lot. Otherwise I live in Madisonville and will head straight up the west causeway approach;-)

I may be in Metairie that day so ill meet everyone at the B&N instead of carpooling. Thank you Lisa for offering to drive!

PLEASE NOTE THE VENUE CHANGED FOR THE END OF MONTH MEETING AND NOT THIS ONE. THANKS SO MUCH.

Our Barnes and Noble gets pretty crowded too. I am okay with trying them this time and maybe the next time we meet on the South Shore we can try Puccino's since we already posted it. Anybody else have a preference?
Thanks Paul for being so conscientious!

    July 26, 2013

    • Rebecca

I think that's great. I will make sure the venue is correct for the end of month August meetup.

      July 26, 2013

Guys, I did a recon of the Barnes and Noble location. At 7pm there were not a lot of available seats in there. I think we could fit our group with maybe a little scrounging for chairs. Also, the tables are smaller than what we have at Cafe Roni.

Out of curiousity, I checked out Puccinos near the Lakeside Shopping Center (Severn Ave. & 17th St.). It has a long table that is rather narrow. We might be able to fit more of us there but it could be a little harder to see and talk to everyone at once.

I'm all for trying Barnes, just wanted all to know how it looked going in.

    July 25, 2013

    • Rebecca

Thanks for the recon. We greatly appreciate it.

I can seat five adults in addition to myself. We can meet in the fresh market parking lot for 6-6:15. Let me know if you would like to ride. No worries, I have a toll tag:-)

    July 23, 2013

    • Rebecca

      Awesome Lisa. Count me in.

      July 23, 2013

Also, There is a small Starbucks there and they have the usual light food, coffees, teas, etc....for anyone running around like me that will need something:-)

Location has been updated. Meeting at 7 and business open until 10. NO DINNER so please eat prior. See you there. Anyone on the Northshore wanting to commute can contact me or Lisa as she has graciously agreed to drive. As soon as LISA RSVP's to this it will be confirmed. I'll bring my toll tag! :-)

FYI, I passed by Barnes and Noble on the way home from our last meeting and they stay open until 11pm on Thursday, which includes the coffee shop. The tables looked a little smaller than Cafe Roni but with our current group size I think we can make it work.

Idea: if we want to make it a rotating meeting and perhaps have it at the Metairie Barnes and Noble, we may be able to get something scheduled with Barnes and Noble. I was given a card of their Community Relations Manager. Just an option we can pursue if the group agrees.

    July 20, 2013

    • Paul H.

"rotating" meaning we rotate locations and one of them is Metairie. Just thought I'd clarify :)

I agree that we should talk about query because even in the editing phases you should be considering what your "hook" is as well as how to market your book. Maybe we could expand on this and include "what is a synopsis" and perhaps "The uses for Outlining."
    Just a thought. Anyone else?

    July 19, 2013

      I like it!

Also Lisa this seemingly is your area of expertise. As NEW co-lead (YAY!!!) do you want to lead this discussion? I can let you come up with tools and resources for helping? What do you think? I'll do it if you would rather not, just lemme know. KK? Thank you.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
