Introduction to Responsive Web

We have a great first meetup planned for you with three speakers, free drinks and a mixed crowd to mingle with. Introduction to Responsive Web is for people of all sectors and backgrounds from business analyst to designer , developer to project manager  - our meetups are inclusive and not focused only on the technical side.

First Up -Lightning Talk  by Zendy Wongso  The Current State of the Web

Zendy is a Frontend Developer at Interact Creative and will provide us with some thoughts on current practices and methodologies that we use on the web, and what we need to learn and understand for the future.

Second Up - The 'short' History of Responsive - Dave Sharpe

We have a timeline presentation by Dave from Visual Jazz - the Front End Lead at one of the foremost FED Agencies in Australia. His slides are great and give a really nice view of how far the Responsive Web has come since 2011... just a few short years, but loads has happened. If you want to get some inspiration for your own designs, get insight into how their projects were managed, how much they cost, and what technology they used - this one isn't to be missed!

Third Speaker - Brave New World of Responsive Designing- Yuan Wang

Yuan is Digital Design Director at Traffic (also our host and sponsor) and will give us a unique insight into how to approach the creative design component of a responsive project.

After the talks there will be plenty of mingling time. Traffic have kindly offered to donate their office space and drinks, and we're working on food sponsorship too.

So come down and join us for a glass and a chat - and some great presentations.

Please keep your RSVP updated so people get the opportunity to attend as we have a waitlist.

If you have any feedback or suggestions please let us know. If you have any specific topic that you are interested in, please let us know, we'll try to cover that in the future. And if anyone wants to give a talk please let us know as well. We still have spots for next month if anyone wants to give a presentation.

The evening was an absolute success and, while I wasn't sure what to expect from the first meetup, it's very clear what the future holds for this group. The importance of collaboration between different sub-teams in ensuring successful responsive projects is clear, and the open discussion of the techniques, options and implementations will make this space invaluable to designers, developers, project managers and more.

My huge thanks and congratulations to the organisers for pulling off an extraordinary inaugural event, many thanks to the great presenters last night, and of course my gratefulness to the sponsors for filling our bellies and providing the space :)

Can't wait for the next one!

I've created a new discussion thread, and I posted my link from last night's presentation there. I'll add more once I get the other links from Dave and Yuan. If anyone has unanswered questions from last night, feel free to start asking questions in the discussion.

    • Zendy W.

I've post all three links from last night into the discussion board.

Thanks for the invite but something has come up.

Just a quick note about locating Traffic tomorrow night. It is at the southernmost end of Gwynne Street. You will see a Traffic signboard in front of JWT (opposite the Cherry Tree Hotel) but that is not where we are. Walk around the corner and go all the way to the end. As you approach the end of Gwynne St, you will see the Traffic flag atop a warehouse building. That's us.

Hi BAS, we all should be aware not to trust Google on being the most up to date. There IS now a cloth flag - but at 6.30pm probably it will be too dark to see anyway. I will get back about the car park spaces... it's a 10 min walk from Richmond station for those coming by PT.

      June 11, 2013

    • Yuan W.

Parking is limited around Gwynne St. We suggest trying Balmain St, Cremorne St or closer to Richmond station.

Looks like there is not much chance of me making it off the wait list for tonight. Is there any way to get hold of some of the outcomes from the night? Sorry I'm new to meet up so not sure if this ill get an email with lots of goodies after the session... For those that make it, enjoy!

      June 11, 2013

    • Zendy W.

Yes, traffic will help us recording the meetup, and we'll upload it to our website later on. At the meantime, you can check our freshly uploaded website at http://beresponsive.i... :)

a responsive web isn't dissimilar to many of the goals of this group, meeting clash: http://www.meetup.com/Infrastructure-Coders/events/117237112/

Hi AJ, I'm not familiar with that group. But if it's quite similar I'd like to invite them to come and talk in our meetup next time.
