I asked Marcos if anything was being planned for loosly organized volunteer efforts as opposed to formally organized social good organizations. After thinking about that for a few minutes, I realized that while some social good efforts need sustainability it is exactly sustainability that I do not like about many social good efforts. This goes back to when I saw an executive of a very famous non-profit respond to a proposal with roughly, "Wow, that would really reduce the problem our cause addresses! Do you know what that would do to donations? It would be against our interest to support anything like that!" For many social good projects, I would like to see volunteers get in, do the good deed and then disolve themselves re. that effort. I fear that too often the sustainability becomes more important than the cause. (I am not suggesting cancer research be done in hackathon style but there are many good causes that are hopefully temporary.) Does anyone else think this way? Comments?

The good news is that some non-profits are making plans to close up shop after distributing their funds or declaring their work done. (Of course I can't think of one at the moment. The Foundation Center's website has some articles from time to time.) One approach might be to build an organization around a particular tool rather than an end result. You could, for example, use mobile communications as a tool, then apply it to various causes. In the best case, some of those causes would simply disappear as a solution to a problem is solved.

It would be good if there was a non-profit that provided the essential organiztional functions for volunteer groups that do not want to organize themselves. They could handle bookkeeping, and perhaps offer marketing and other services (almost like a franchise) so that the volunteers could focus 100% on the cause.
