Sinko de Mayo Dive and Picnic

Celebrate the Mexican national holiday with a great dive and picnic with friends.

The turtles are feeding on the patch reef to fuel their long crawl up the beach to lay their eggs.  Grasses, algae, and sea cress flourish on the patches with colorful tropicals coloring the scene like wild flowers.  This is the time to practice your photo skills on this picturesque reef that is an easy swim off the beach.

We'll gather and gear up at some tables next to the Broadwalk in the park.  Our plan is to be in the water between 9:30 and 10:00am for a leisurely dive that should max at 24' depth.  Most divers can expect a solid 45 to 60 minutes bottom time on a 80 cu ft tank.  This dive is easy enough for newer divers and we will have experienced divers to guide the reef.  We'll also have a brief beach diving clinic for those who have never dove except from a boat.

Entry to the park is right off N. Ocean Drive and Sheridan St.  Parking is only $6 for the entire day.  Freshwater showers and restroom facilities are available.  We'll coordinate food on a pot luck basis.  The tables have grills installed, so the usual barbeque fare can work pretty well.

Note that we have a Discover Scuba event in the afternoon that is FREE for your friends.  (We charge bystanders and non-members $99 for this experience.)  If you can bring an extra tank of air for your guest, that will make it easier to give them a full dive experience.  RSVP on the Discover Dive, if you want us to reserve a spot for you.

I won't be able to join for the dive, but might stop by at the picnic area and introduce myself to the group for later dives.

That would be great, Sue. Maybe we can have a dive club meeting to plan future dives.

Weather update: Surf was calm with a gentle west wind this morning. West winds are forecast to continue into the morning which keeps the chop down. There is a large swell system producing some waves but nothing serious. So far, so good.

Just a quick note to all: weather forecasters say the waves may grow large by Sunday morning. Although the surf is dead calm now and the weather folks have been wrong a lot lately, the surf could still become rough. If it is too rough by Sat night, I will postpone the dive and the picnic. Otherwise, we'll see what dawn brings Sunday and hope for the best. Hey, at least we'll get some hot dogs and have a fun dive club meeting. Maybe we could use the time to plan some future dives?

We don't want any of our divers to miss this fine dive and picnic because they lack a tank or other gear. Let me know [masked] and I will have what you need onhand.

Hi, all. I need to rent tanks. I'm not familiar with this location. Can someone let me know the closest dive shop to this park so I can pick up that morning? Thanks

    May 1, 2013

    • Chrissy

Try Coastal Marine.....they are on East Dania Beach Boulevard and are pretty reasonable. It's my local dive shop. [masked]

The water is still way too cold for this wimp, but i want to get this dive season started!

Our team dove the reef adjacent to the picnic spot today. It is a wonderful platform just 100 yds offshore. It rises from 23' in the sand to 15' from the surface with deep ravines, mesa-like plateaus, and an undercut limestone base. You will want your camera on this dive.

I am very interested in joining this dive and picnic. Never attended any meet-up before. Sounds great!
