Mam Tor and the Great Ridge (8.5 miles circular walk)

There is a charge of £1 per person / per walk to help cover the cost of hosting this group on meetup and purchasing of maps and kit requried to organise and lead these walks. If you can please pay me £1 on arrival and can I please request exact money as I may not have sufficient change on me?

This is a challenging but fun walk, with beautiful views from Mam Tor and the Great Ridge. I have walked this walk several times before, actually it was my very first walk in the Peak District!

Distance: From Bedford to Hope - 132 miles and drive time approx 2 hours and 30 mins

Early Birds: Meet at The Old Hall Hotel 09:45 (ish) - They have a very nice tea room and it is walker friendly! Entrance to the cafe is via The Old Hall Hotel car park, apart from a nice hot drink and maybe a bacon sandwich, this is also your opportunity to use their toilet facilities before we start our walk! Please do not leave your vehicle in their car park, this car park reserved for hotel guests and for those using the tea room.

Walk Starts: OS: SK[masked] (10:30am outside Hope Primary School, Eccles Close, Hope, Derbyshire)

Parking: Street parking available on Edale Road and parts of Eccles Close. My plan is to park up here, and then walk around to The Old Hall Hotel

Distance: 8.5 miles circular walk

Time: 5 to 6 hours (includes stoppage times)

Difficulty: Hard

Total Ascent: 505 metres

Hazards: A few quite roads to negotiate

Toilets: The Old Hall Hotel in Hope & in Castleton, if toilet break required in Castleton then probably have to pop into one of the local pubs and purchase a packet crisps as a thank you?! When our walk finishes, we can go for a nice cold or hot drink in The Old Hall Hotel?!

Provisions: Bring a packed lunch, energy bars, snacks and water (plenty of water)

Car Share: Please advise whether you require or can offer? Mobile numbers should be exchanged between driver & passengers and car share costs at driver's discretion.

For more information: http://www.walkingenglishman.com/peakdistrict04.htm

Accomodation: For those wishing to travel up the night before, or perhaps wanting to make a long weekend of it? Well you have so many places to choose from on the internet and I thought I would provide you with the following link to get you started?

I live for the day when I get a mention too, until then - I keep taking those pictures and uploading them here (just a selection this time, or I will be on this thing till morning waiting to upload all of it) The full coverage is on FB. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to do so, great time was had, but I need not to mention that anyway! P.S. Steve's agreed to pay for the picture by the way ;o)

Really great weekend - brilliant to meet up Saturday night for food, drinks and laughs followed by one of the nicest mountain days you could ask for. Weather kind, company superb. Looking forward to the next walk this weekend and to getting away for a weekend whenever. Thanks as usual to Ian, without whom these group experiences just wouldn't happen. Outstanding.

Can I say that the photo's don't do it justice as good as they are. I'm still trying to work out how to add mine but will do so soon I hope. The "hills are alive" must go on here as a minimum. This walk was one of those occasions when you want to do it all over again and there arn't too many of those in life (sadly)! Brilliant, fab weekend. Thank you all, plus Ian of course for organising.

weather looks to have improved for tomorrow morning, I may just bring my shorts... just in case ;)

      April 5, 2014

  • Ian

It's looking like rain for tomorrow, If that's the case, then I shall be wearing my breathable water proofs. This walk can get a little muddy half way between Hope and Castleton, but apart from that it's pretty good ground that we walk on. Oh yeah, can I ask those travelling with me to bring a spare pair of shoes to travel in and a bag for dirty boots, vehicle is easily hoovered and cleaned, but would be helpful

    Thanks

    Ian

    April 5, 2014

Hope everyone doing Mam Tor tomorrow has a great walk, and that the weather holds for you. Stay safe and look forward to seeing some photos and hearing about it on another walk. :-)

Like many of you I'm sure, I am keeping an eye on the weather for Sunday... http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/castleton-youth-hostel-derbyshire#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=[masked]

Just wanted to share with you my thinking on what to wear, extra gear to take etc...

I shall be wearing the same old gear as normal and packing extra layers and waterproofs... extra layers will probably more so be required on top of Mam Tor and across the ridge to Lose Hill (aka Wards Piece) as we are higher up here and is therefore usually colder than down near Hope and Castleton. Gloves and some kind of hat to help keep me warm and keep the heat in will also be carried in my backpack

I shall be carrying nutritional and energy snacks and fudge to help give me the extra push when climbing and carrying a minimum 3L water in my CamelBak - maybe an additional 500ml just in case for backup!

    Plus a nice lunch!

Or if any other suggestions - do "speak now, or put up with us and the choice we've made"?
    P.S. Email is also acceptable.

Really great idea Ian, great choice :). For those in the club who are unfamilair with the area (probably most people?) this really is one of the nicest walks in the Peak District, with superb views over both the "Dark Peak" (Gritstone rock) on one side of the Great Ridge and the "White Peak" (Limestone rock) on the other. If it helps, although it might seem like a bit of a journey for some (perhaps?) it's all easily do-able in a full day from here (even with refreshments in the Old Hall afterwards, of course:)). As Ian says, making a weekend of it would also be great.

    1 · March 10, 2014

    • Chris

Hi Ian sorry for the late reply but I've been away all day. No worries about the above. Not sure exactly what route or direction you had in mind so I'd made an assumption late last night (always dodgy that :)) Happy to chat this weekend - see you then. Cheers Chris

This walk would have been good for navigation training, but not to worry, I shall try and include at least one walk away from Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties each month, so plenty more opportunities to come :)
