We'll be starting the 2013 meetups with a nice juicy bit of CanLit.
"A 2005 Canada Reads Selection
In this classic road novel, Jacques Poulin tells the story of a man in search of his brother. The geographical journey — through Detroit, into Chicago, on to St. Louis, along the Oregon Trail and into California — becomes a metaphor for the exploration of the history of the French in North America."
Originally published in 1984, this book is considered a classic of modern Quebec literature.
If you're not comfortable with the original French version, the English translation, by Sheila Fischman, was reprinted in 2004 by Cormorant Books, and so is available on order from Amazon and Chapters. The Ottawa public has 4 copies of the English and 2 copies of the French, and of course it's also available as an e-book.
