(rerun) Build a game with Unity: Beginner's class

Unity3D and C# for beginners: get started and make your first simple game!

Learn how to set up Unity and make a simple 3D game in a free workshop!

No prior experience necessary, just a computer and a sponge-like brain. We will cater to the complete newbie, assuming 0 experience. We'll be covering the basics of C# and Unity.

If you were waitlisted for the last one, message me and I'll give you a spot.

If you were at a previous lesson, please think about letting another person attend since space is very limited.

## Students MUST BRING

A laptop with Unity installed. Go to the site and click download. We'll be using the free version of Unity. If you want to use Pro or the Pro trial, that's completely fine too.

Unity3D

## IT MUST BE INSTALLED. SERIOUSLY.

It's huge, don't expect to be able to download and install it here. If you don't have it,  you'll seriously be missing out, though you can still come. Open it at least once to make sure it works, too! I'll try to help anyone troubleshoot before we start.

Again,

OPEN IT AT LEAST ONCE. MAKE SURE IT WORKS!

See you there!

Bryan was very helpful but it was a pretty big class and it wouldn't hurt to have one or two more "teaching assistants" available. All in all it was a very successful and useful class that I would highly recommend to others. FYI, in the future you should communicate to the hosts how you want the room setup as we had to rearrange all the tables and chairs (this is what you get for being the first one there ha ha). Also, since Microsoft gave me free Starbucks coffee and a pistachio mini-cupcake I request all future classes be held there! ;)

      They have cupcakes?

Cake pops too. Was very nice of the MS people... I guess I can't say anything mean about Microsoft for awhile lol

Great pace for beginners and those with programming experience. Sam was very patient and gave us a few laughs.

Great Meetup! Learned a lot about unity. Sam was great at explaining things, and quite funny. He also made sure everyone was on track. Definitely would recommend this meetup!!

I thought it was fantastic. I've taught similar classes in the past (Adobe, Javascript, etc.) and thought Sam was a GREAT teacher. Even when we ran into some roadblocks (it's programming, it happens) he either walked us through the changes or still managed to make it a teaching experience even if he didn't have time to resolve it in the time allotted. I'd agree having a printout of the code would be super helpful (even if it changes in class) or even better, a two screen solution so he could just leave the code up the whole time. I stopped to help the people next to me a couple times and it was VERY difficult to catch up (the second time, impossible). I'd also love copies of the "notebook" he drew diagrams in as well as any other notes or material he has (he said some of that is available on his website).

This was a great first Unity immersion.

Thanks so much. Very interesting. I would suggest a printed page of instructions. It is very hard to watch the instructor's screen and mimic actions when things go so quickly. You might also suggest that people watch the tutorials before coming. The instructor was very knowledgeable and the people there were great.

We need a blender meetup!!!!! Blender! Blender! Blender!!!!

Class was great, Sam has a laid back approach and a very crass mouth. Both of which worked well to get the point across that game development is about being patient and working through your problems even if you have to throw a swear in or two! Now if Unity could get their IDE working...

I enjoyed it --- cant wait for the second part.

I agree pacing was perfect and i liked that Sam explained concepts. The class helped me figure out something that has been puzzling me for weeks! Would definitely like a follow up class

What time can we get in? I around the area but not sure if I can go in now. :/

    August 7, 2014

    • Sara M.

Betw 41st and 42nd on 8th ave. So across from Port Authority, there's a Microsoft Building. You will see Microsoft written on the screen. Go there.

      1 · August 7, 2014

    • Mitch G.

There is an entrance on the corner of 41st and 8th but they make you go to the entrance that is actually on 8th Avenue.

Hi guys I just had an emergency and will not be able to make it tonight. Who ever is on waiting list next could take my seat. Enjoy

    August 7, 2014

    • Bryan

The RSVP list is closed. It needs to be handed into Microsoft days in advanced for security.

      August 7, 2014

    • Mitch G.

I was going to make a joke... But maybe not when I am on my way to the MS offices! :O

      August 7, 2014

  • Selina

Hi! I sent you guys an email yesterday, but it might have gotten buried. Is there a way I can get off the waitlist for tonight's meetup?

    August 7, 2014

    • Sara M.

I could not make it today, so you can have my seat if possible.

Just sent out the security form, check your emails. If you still didn't get it, then meetup message me.

    • Joaquin G.

Hi Samuel, I was one of the first to rsvp but did not receive a form.

      August 6, 2014

    • Samuel E.

Joaquin, I sent an update to MS to add you onto the list this morning, but they haven't gotten back to me

      August 6, 2014

  • Mitch G.

Does it matter if you have it installed on OS X or Windows 8? Thanks!

    August 3, 2014

    • Sara M.

I'm running it on Windows 8.1 if that helps. Win 8 should be fine. I recommend a wireless/wired mouse for easier control maneuverability.

      August 6, 2014

    • Mitch G.

I have 8.1 as well and installed it there just in case. Will take your advice re the mouse. Thanks!

Samuel, I work at the Academy for Software Engineering and have a few students who are interested in attending but Meetup asks you to confirm you are older than 18 to register. Can they reserve directly with you?

    1 · August 4, 2014

    • Kevin B.

      Are there any spaces available?

      1 · August 4, 2014

    • Bryan

Unfortunately not, the RSVP list has ended. But stay tuned for other classes and dont forget to check out our 2 day Unity Workshop!

      August 6, 2014

  • Samuel E.

I've just removed everyone who hasn't filled out the security form, allowing some waitlisters in. New people: please check your emails and fill out the form! You need it to get past security!

    August 3, 2014

  • Angel S.

I really love to attend but cam you guys have a different schedule, pretty sure that more people will like to attend other days. Thanks.

    August 1, 2014

Message me regarding any questions not pertaining to the meetup, let's keep this page clean

      August 3, 2014

      Sorry about that!

My laptop battery went bad. Is there a place to plug up there? I have to wait for it to be shipped to me.

    August 3, 2014

    • Samuel E.

Yep, there are outlets for everyone.

      August 3, 2014

  • Samuel E.

If you do not fill out the security form, you will be sent home at the front desk :)

    SO FILL IT OUT.

If you didn't see the question upon RSVP yes for some reason, I'll be sending out a reminder once the meetup's full.
