Volunteering at the Maryland Food Bank

Volunteering at the Maryland Food Bank:
We have committed to 15 volunteers for Sat. April 19, 2014 from 12:00 -3:00 pm with a 20 minute mandatory orientation before our shift. We will be working in the warehouse as a team sorting food and products for
distribution, loading and packaging. There is lifting involved up to 25 lbs.
We can work together and make a difference for the less fortunate. If you commit, you must be able to arrive for orientation and stay for the whole shift. Our paperwork has already been submitted. You can go to the MD. Food Bank online for more details. Once we have 15 volunteers we will add others interested to a waiting list in the event someone has an emergence and has to drop out. The deadline to RSVP will be on April 12. Thanks!

I may be busy 4/19. If not, I'll change my RSVP back to yes a week or so before.

I just realized that I may have hijacked Frank's event. Frank if you want to make me an event organizer I can set up a separate event and organize it. I don't want to further confuse things for the original event with the food bank.

It all depends upon the Tuesday or Thursday. I teach some evening classes off an on on Tuesdays at Harford Community college. Usually the last Thursday of the month I have another commitment. I look forward being able to do this sometime.

There is also a small shelter in Belcamp called the Welcome One shelter that needs smaller groups more frequently. I can put you in touch with their organizer if you want to explore that option too.

I just spoke with the fellow in charge of the schedule at welcome one. They can use groups of 2 to 6 seven days a week to make and serve dinner. On weekday dinner prep you also make sandwiches for the next day's lunch. On Saturdays and Sundays they can also use groups to make and serve lunches. They have a lot of food in their pantry but generally we would buy ingredients to make a meal. So there would be some monetary investment as well as time. Let me know if anybody is interested and maybe Frank could let me be an organizer for another smaller group. This could be a more recurring thing too if the group wants that.

Ok, I talked with the organizer at this smaller shelter again. They already have groups signed up for every day of the month indefinitely to make meals in the evenings. Good for them! So I put myself down as interested in filling in for any cancellations on Tuesday or Thursdays. I'll post here or ask Frank to post a separate event if the opportunity comes up.

Do you know if children (teenagers) are welcome to volunteer as well? I've been looking into some sort of giving back opportunity for my children.

Kimberly, yes teenagers are welcome if accompanied by an adult

I can attend...but...I am working every Saturday until March. I am off 3/1/14 and then I work every other Saturday after that. Whatever works for the group though.
