Thank you for your interest in our Bellevue Writing Critique Group.
We’re, first and foremost, a critique group.
We are not a writing class, a publishing discussion forum or here to debate the merits of one form of writing over another. We simply look at each person’s piece and try to give them the best and most supportive feedback we can.
We meet once a week in the Community Room at Crossroads Mall in Bellevue every Saturday 7-9 PM. The group members rent a room and help pay meet-up fees so each person contributes $15.00 a month to cover expenses. (1st month dues waived as you try us out)
Each week each person posts their writing to the files section of our meet-up group. Before the Saturday meeting you are responsible for printing out the work of each person and editing that work. Remember to also bring in a single copy of your own work to read from. (Word count limits vary according to group size. The word count limit usually hovers around 1000-1500 words)
At the meeting one person will read their work and a round table discussion will follow. The discussion is focused on the story, continuity, phrasing etc. Fine edits, grammar and spelling are usually left out of the discussion and simply noted on the copy of the writer’s work which will be handed to them with your critiques at the end of their turn. Then we repeat the process with the next writer.
Since time is limited we try to stay on topic and get through each piece.
Unless it is a part of the story read and pertaining to the writing, not the content, we do not discuss religion, politics or any other hot topics that would stir discourse away from the writing at hand.
We try to give the best support we can for each writer and their goals. If you are not used to giving critiques, a good rule of thumb is ”two stars and a wish” which means to say two things (minimum) that you like about the piece or what you see as its strengths and then an “and I think the story would be stronger if you looked at this.”
Many of the group members are in the process of writing novels. Under the files section you can find compilations of the pieces that have already been shared. Reading the compilations is strongly encouraged to bring you up to speed on the material being shared.
If this sounds like your type of group, we look forward to meeting you at the next meeting. Bellevue Creative Writing is looking for a few new members to fill out the group. We are looking for serious writers who wish to improve their skills with the thought of possible submission of their work.
We meet weekly on Saturday from 7-9 in a private room at Crossroads Mall. Come try us out, see if it's a good fit. We look forward to hearing from you.
