Broken Top Backcountry Ski

  • This location is shown only to members

A wilderness ski that can be done in five hours or take the whole day depending on conditions.  It is about 11 miles round trip - lots of climbing on the way out with a very fast return. If you can do Flagline than you can do this. Partial metal edge skis suggested and skins are not a bad idea. We may be taking turns breaking trail.    Molly[masked] if you can't find us or are running late.

The route starts at the Mt Bachelor Nordic Center and heads up the Big Meadow Trail.  At Big Meadow we branch off into the Three Sisters Wilderness heading north to pick up Crater Ditch, which takes us NW into sight of Broken Top. Option of skiing further towards Broken Top if time and conditions allow. Please bring a ziplock bag, this is a pack in pack out wilderness area. Expect a little wilderness conversation over lunch.

Experienced skiers only.  Please bring your gear for emergency preparedness and inclement weather. Bring water, lunch, cell phone and GPS if you have one. We will leave the meeting location at 8:50 am so please be on time. http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/1524496

Hard to imagine a more beautiful day. Moderately strenuous, at 12.2 miles, 1200 ft of elevation, though not technically difficult. WONDERFUL views. Access route and stats at http://connect.garmin.com/activity/439087114

It is very dry. Climbing isn't super easy, but as it warms up tomorrow I'm sure itll go from almost perfect to perfect. Expect a zoo a bachelor tomorrow.

Is this a touring route or a skin climb + alpine descent type route?

    January 18, 2014

    • Molly

touring into wilderness so not a marked trail for the top portion. Skins are an option but not required. Most people will not have them.
