Bikepacking : 4 Lake Challenge - Advanced MTB Ride

Pre-trip meeting 5 pm on Thursday Sep 4th at Brewerks !

This introductory bikepacking trip will start at Crescent Lake, and visit several other lakes in the area : Lemolo, Timpanogas, Indigo, and Summit.  The trip is suitable for riders of advanced-intermediate skill, with little or no bikepacking experience.  Mileage per day will be around 25 miles, at an 'exploratory' pace.

Trip length will be 3-4 days - it can be done easily in 3 days, but might want to extend another day depending on conditions and group consensus.

Ride will start from the Oldenberg trailhead at the south end of Crescent Lake : take Road 60 south from the town of Crescent Lake, and follow the road around the lake CCW to the trailhead parking on the left (just before a hill and about a half mile before pavement ends).  It is about a 1.5 hour drive from Bend.

Day 1 : Crescent Lake to Lemolo Lake.  Follow Oldenberg trail, a steady but gradual climb for 10 miles up to the PCT intersection at  Windy Pass.  Then 7 miles downhill on Kelsey horse trail, to the start of the North Umpqua Trail.  Follow NUT for a couple of miles to Lemolo Lake and camp there.

Day 2 : Lemolo Lake to Indigo Lake.  NUT to Rd 700 intersection, then follow roads 700,70 and 2154 to Timpanogas Lake.  A fair amount of climbing this day, mostly on dirt roads.  Take trail up to Indigo Lake and camp there.

Day 3 : Indigo Lake to Summit Lake.  Take Windy Pass trail to Summit Lake.  For a 3 day trip, continue past Summit to Windy Lakes trail and back to trailhead.  For a 4 day trip, possibly explore Indigo Lake area trails, then head over to Summit Lake to camp, and then have a short ride back to trailhead on day 4.

Where should we meet too carpool? Country store at DRW? I would like to get a ride one way as I am meeting a friend at Tokatee Saturday, and then going to Ashland. I'll pitch in for gas...

just met up with james. He will take a car (not the broken one) to DRW country store for 8 am. If you are there, I can load 2 bikes on my car, James can carry one in his, and we all make it down. So maybe will work out. what's the 97 exit name for that store ?

Sounds good. I'll be there. I think the exit is called Baker Rd. It is right at the entrance to Deschutes River Woods. If you want to contact me more immediately my number is[masked] (call or text). Thanks for making this happen, I am really looking forward to it...

Have you already scouted out the camping areas? Is a hammock a reasonable option for this ride?

I hope to see more trips like this! Unfortunately I have a friend in town this weekend, but would like to do some more bikepacking out here.

In scouting out this bikepacking route, I now have an idea for another weekend trip - probably 9/19 - will announce it after this one

I am going to have to cancel as we are heading over to Idaho to ride the Idaho Hot Springs Mt. bike Route except we are riding it on dual sport motorcycles. We won't be back till the 9th. When I get back I'd still like to do this ride bikepacking style so I'm looking forward to hearing how the route is.
    Have fun you guys.

Ok so I am just going for the first night, and then either riding back to Crescent lake or over to tokatee. I plan on using a cross bike btw as I have a bag that won't fit on my mtb. Is that upper trail real gnarly?

    August 23, 2014

    • Marc F

I wouldn't recommend a cross bike for the first day of the trip : both the climb and the descent have lots of sandy sections. And probably not a cross bike for the other days either :) And btw the sandy sections were fine on my 29'er MTB.

Sounds great Marc, but I've got the Smoke 'n' Fire 400 I'm leaving for on the 8th I think this will be too close.

Too bad Gary, we will miss your expertise
