Ran across this description and thought BACE members might get a laugh.......

CROSS COUNTRY
Explanation: Pedalling a lot, sweating, and eating goo. Long ascents and descents with single track trails.

Terrain/Location: Yes. Slightly rough trails on wide open terrain.

Examples of Bikes: Wimpy ones. Santa Cruz blur,

ALL MOUNTAIN (AM)
Explanation: Like XC, but ballsier. Decent sized jumps and technical trails.

Terrain/Location: All mountains. Nothing but mountains. Big ones.

Examples of Bikes: Expensive ones. Santa Cruz nomad, bikes with 6" travel and capability to pedal well.

FREERIDING (FR)
Explanation: Jumping off of stuff, getting hurt.

Terrain/Location: Wherever you're not supposed to be riding. Steep technical mountains with drops, cliffs, rocks, north shore

Examples of Bikes: Heavy ones. Santa Cruz VP free. Usually 7-8 inch travel with beefy frames

DOWNHILL (DH):
Explanation: Shuttle/push to the top, then ride down. Repeat.

I see the mention of "Trail" bikes often in the press. Where do these fit in? I like a bike with aggressive (non slack) geometry that can climb as unless you shuttle that is where the most time is spent.

Most like "All Mountain" bikes. 5-6" travel, 30lbs +/-, both pedals and descends well, usually being ridden by the people you see on MRT, Alpine, Met-Win & Flagline who are smiling the most (both ways!)

For Central Oregon, the bike of choice is a lightweight 29er hard tail. It climbs the best and running tubeless at around 25 psi provides enough comfort on the descents. Rides like it is on rails. So much fun.
