Off Leash Hike through the Little Dry River Canyon

This is the hike we had to cancel because of the snowstorm earlier this month.  Here's the plan: We'll drive out to the Oregon Badlands Wilderness and hike around 3.5-4 miles (out & back) past beautiful ancient Juniper trees to the Little Dry River Canyon formed during the last Ice Age. This little canyon contains several overhang caves that were used long ago as refuge by Native People seeking protection from the cold. These overhangs are blackened by the smoke from the fires that kept those people warm. Once we're in the canyon keep your eyes open as there are several ancient pictographs on the walls of the canyon.
This is a great area for dogs to run off leash. It is really important that you keep your dogs within sight as the Badlands is a huge wilderness area and a dog separated from the group could easily get lost out there.
Always bring water for yourself and your dogs. It is also suggested that you bring shoe chains (Yak Traks) in case there is ice on the trails. Always be safe out in the wilderness.

Mark: Thanks for organizing this, Sue, I and Tucker really enjoyed the hike and meeting everyone. Was great to see all of the dogs running around, being dogs. Next time I'll bring a few more beers.......

Another great hike-the leaders did a great job of mapping out the trails in advance of this event. Everyone had a great time exploring the caves and trails. Spectacular views of the mountains. I would love to repeat this hike.

Great day. Great people. Great dogs. All came together to make this a outing that I'll remember for a long time. Thanks to everyone who attended for making this a fun day for both 2 & 4 legged critters!

Hey Mark... I'm going to attend this event, and I would be happy to help out as a second "leader" to open this up for those on the waiting list. If I can be of any help, let me know and give me a call to discuss details: [masked] (Cell Phone). See you soon, buddy.

I would like to go but this is a long hike for me as I have back problems therefore I move kinda slow and long walks bothers me after awhile. Whens your next group meeting?

Mylum, most of our hikes are 3 miles or more, but if you'd like to suggest a venue for a shorter hike for people who prefer hiking less than 3 miles with their dogs, please let me know. We'll get someone to lead up the hike.

I'm so sorry I can't attend this, my first event if I did. But, two great-nephews are wrestling here in La Pine at a Regional match. My nephew and the rest of his family will be staying with me. I've done this trip several times in the past and it is wonderful.
