Dog First Aid Seminar by Scott D. Shaw, DVM

This is a No Host event.  We suggest you show up at least 15 minutes before the event begins in order to get a good seat.

Local veterinarian Scott D. Shaw, DVM will conduct a FREE session about dog first aid in general and in particular about the types of injuries that might befall our canine friends while hiking out in the wilderness.

Dr. Shaw has been practicing veterinary medicine for over twenty-nine years. During the first part of his career he attended classes on internal medicine, advanced dentistry and orthopedic surgical techniques. For the past twelve years he has expanded his education into holistic medicine.  He finished the professional veterinary homeopathy course in 2000. He became a certified veterinary acupuncturist in 2004. Since then he has taken many classes on advanced acupuncture techniques, Chinese herbal medicine and food therapy. He feels the blending of western and eastern medicine creates a balance for optimum patient care.

Dr. Shaw will have dog first aid kits for sale at this meeting.  The first aid kits cost $15.  The proceeds will benefit the local chapter of the Boy Scouts.

In addition to the valuable canine first aid information being offered by Dr. Shaw, there will be a raffle to benefit two local non-profit organizations, Bend Spay & Neuter Project and Battle Buddies.

No dogs at this event, please.

80% of the people in Bend are from California. Just saying Neil.

I have just been informed that if you are not RSVP'd for this event, then please do not attend. Seating is limited and there will be a sign-in sheet at the event for those who have RSVP'd.

It's a 'Bend' thing. People either wait until the last second to commit or uncommit. This is not meant as a criticism I'm just speaking from years of observation :)

I don't think its a Bend thing, it happens everywhere. My sister and I had a vitamin store in California and we did classes there. We would call everyone the day before the event to remind them. They would actually confirm that they were coming, and then not show up.

Glad I went. Good reminders and now to find that perfect spare t-shirt for the pack.

What an excellent event! Informative and great to see so many dog-caring folks. Two adorably precious Pitties were there offering kisses (as they usually do :-), too. Thank you Dr. Shaw, Dancin' Woofs, Bend Spay and Neuter, and Battle Buddies.

Great talk! Dr. Shaw knows what he is talking about! and he gets out there and hikes and bikes! And, I just learned about "Battle Buddies" whose mission it is to train Service Dogs for Veterans! How cool is that!

"a dog kissing booth"? Does that mean people bring their dogs?

    March 25, 2014

    • Mark D.

No, I don't think it would be a good idea to bring your dog.

Even if it's listed as full, would it be okay to show up in case not everyone who RSVP'd actually attends?

Have a seat, dear Susie! I went ahead and made other plans. There are whispers of another future event featuring Dr. Shaw.

I hope SO bad that there will be another opportunity to attend an event like this in the near future. I had to go out of town for a month for several business events, and thought I would be back in time, but sadly, that will not be the case.

I think there will be more of the same scheduled later on. So do not despair, Paula!

Just wanted to stick in a shameless plug for Dr. Shaw. I've worked with him several times, and he is an awesome vet, as well as a great guy.

The note I got on email said 1am-2am so I thought it meant 1pm-2pm Now I see the meeting is at 6pm-7pm. I don't think I can make to this meeting since I cannot drive at nights. Thanks.

Perhaps one of our members can give you a ride, i.e. pick you up and take you back home. I'll see if I can get someone to do that, Mylum.
