Night Street Portraits in Bend

I've been intrigued with night photography for a few years now. Night portraits of people can be very interesting. I often just use myself and a timer to get them, but it would be nice to find people or use each other for them. Back alley, street crossing, in front of buildings, street lights all could make great shots for night portraits. We or you can invite people to act as our models, or know of people who would be interested in modeling. I'm still brainstorming on this, so if you have suggestions, please feel free to express them.

Wow. Takes a minute to sign up for meetup, take a minute to change your RSVP, please. 16 signed up, 6 showed up. Thanks to the other 5 that showed up! It was good to meet some new people, rain added some sheen for the photos.

Download the iPhone Meetup app, or save the site as a bookmark, then you can easily change your status. I've saved the calendar, so I can easily see what's going on.

A bit of rain. Not many of us to act as models. But I had a good time with the people who showed up. Nice to meet George and Naomi. And thanks to Naomi for being such a good sport and acting the part of model!

Well, it sprinkled and 3/4 bailed out. We had a a good time regardless and the rain provided additional challenges and rewards. Some very good shots.

Look like 30% chance of rain showers for Tuesday night, but we're still a go. If it's raining when we meet at the library, I will reschedule.

I'm not able to be there, and I know not everyone likes to shoot in the rain. But we did a night shoot at Mirror Pond a couple of years ago in the rain and umbrellas work wonders. The rain added another dimension to the photographs that was very interesting.

Todd posed the question to me: when does it get dark now that daylight saving time has started? I let him know we're after the twilight, as well as the darkness.

7:25ish... Yes, twilight and darkness.. :)

Went to downtown Bend Friday night with some people to model for me. Turned out to be a great time. I learned a lot about my settings and limits I have to work with the equipment I have.
I found some good locations for our scenes, and hope to find more in the coming weeks. Black and whites are great for these scenes too. Working with people as subjects for night shots is a blast and I really love! Hope to get really good at it some day...

I have been brainstorming over how this night will go, I’m sure others will have a different perspective, but what I like to do is split up into small groups. Each of these group will head out in downtown Bend and have a list of portraits scenes to create and of course everyone will have a chance to take their own photos as they wish. We can set up a critique a week or so later to present what we each created. Portrait scene list:
Alley Shot (both group and individual)
Street Light pole (someone leaning against pole or wall next to street light or funny portrait)
Sidewalk candid shot( stranger or one of us)
Street crossing scene (silhouette and lit)
Blurred scene with someone standing still
Through the window (people having dinner or shopping)
Close up (each person can decide how they would like their portrait taken in the night)

Feel free to provide your own suggestions.

"Night street portrait photography" to get an idea what I'm thinking.

Hi guys, Robert blurred scene with someone standing still is pretty easy to do in daylight using a 8x neutral density filter and shooting around 1/6th shutter speed. I have never tried it at night though.

The colors before pitch dark are wonderful downtown, especially around the theater and the park. If you've not seen my site it will give you some ideas.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
