Photo Outing: Ochoco Mines

The Ochoco Mountains contain the remains of a once vibrant mining industry. Several of the mines are easily accessible and make great subjects for photography. I plan to spend a day photographing the Independent, the Mother Lode and the Blue Ridge mines. They are all about 40 minutes East of Prineville. The photograph shows part of the Blue Ridge complex. I have to point out that the mine buildings are all in disrepair. Some of them are located on steep ground and there is a certain degree of risk involved. Photographing the interiors can be very rewarding - but it is also challenging due to difficult lighting and the decrepit and dangerous nature of the buildings. To take advantage of the evening light we will leave Bend at 4pm and arrive around 5:30. I plan to stay until dusk so we'll be home late. Meet at Starbucks at the Cascade Village Mall (by World Market) at 4pm.

I posted a few photos here on the Meetup site, but to see the rest, my Flickr set is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sa...

The rest of you who were there yesterday, please post links to all your photos, too, if there are more than what you posted here. :-)

Sounds good--it is an awesome location with the waterfalls, cool pools in the river, and the former power plant.

Nitty Gritty Industrial Archeology. The old mine buildings are great subjects for photography. So much history. So atmospheric.

I'd like to meet you guys as you pass through Prineville, then follow you out to the mines. What's the best way to do that?

    July 27, 2013

Deborah - yes. Just wait for us at the 26 turnoff. We should be there around 4:45 to 5pm or so. I will be driving a Burgundy Honda Ridgeline truck.

Make it simple. Meet us at the Ochoco Ranger Station. Turn right from 26 onto Ochoco Creek Road then drive 5 miles to the ranger station parking lot.

I am not comfortable with the fire danger. For me this trip would constitute an unnecessary risk. Count me out.

I've got a Camry, so can fit three other adults, or four people if they're small enough to fit three to the backseat. :-)

Hi, Everyone - Please note that the entire Forest is under a Red Flag Warning and the Fire Precaution Level has been upped to "extreme." This means NO OPEN FLAMES, NO SMOKING (EXCEPT IN CARS). It would be best to not plan to use a camp stove - perhaps bring a thermos, instead?. The restrictions also mean no parking off the side of the road - stay on the asphalt or gravel to avoid the possibility of a catalytic converter sparking grass. Everything is tinder-dry even up here in the mountains!

Sorry you guys, something came up and I will be unable to attend. I hope to make it out there on my own sometime this summer though, so please post lots of comments and pictures after your meetup! Sorry to miss this. :( Have fun!!

Which USFS Road, exactly, will you be turning onto from US26? What is the nearest Milepost? Is the turnoff before or after the Bandit Springs Rest Area? Thanks for the additional info. See you tomorrow!

Double booked. I'm glad that i heard about this meetup though — I'm going to check these out on my own, or maybe we can do another trip out there.

My weekend plans have taken a 360 so I won't be able to come. I WILL be there soon however!

    July 26, 2013

I increased the group size to 15 so everybody is welcome to come along. If you intend to stay until dusk/dark the remember to bring a flashlight! See you on Saturday. Tom

Greetings! I received a ping about the Group and this outing from Meetup and would really LOVE to join in on this outing - I know there is a waitlist though. Here's the special circumstance - I live in the Ochocos across the road from the mines but, ironically, have never been to these three. What a great opportunity to shoot these photogenic gems of history with kindred spirits! May I join in with you on Saturday when you get to the turnoff from US 26? The weather and late afternoon golden light will be fabulous.

Hi! New to Bend, itching to learn more of the area, meet people and dust off my photo gear :)

    July 23, 2013

  • Tom R.

Hi folks. Looks like we have a good group. Here's some tips. You are probably going to want to photograph the interior of the buildings and we are planning to stay to dusk - so you will probably want to bring a tripod. Also, if you happen to own a wide angle lens (not essential) this might be a good opportunity to use it. Weather forecast for Sat is clear skies. 88F falling to 48F overnight. Sunset is 8:33pm and Moonrise is 11:41pm. So - if you (we) have patience to wait until about 10pm you can probably photograph the Milky Way.

Daniel. No problems. I will increase the group size to 10. Don't drive to Bend. We'll meet you in Prineville or at one of the mines. Decide later.

    July 22, 2013

  • Daniel B.

oh, may be a moot point unless someone drops out. Just noticed the waiting list.

    July 22, 2013

  • Daniel B.

I live in Prineville - can I just meet you all there, instead of driving to Bend and then back across P'ville?

    Tom:
I won't be back from AZ till the 28th, so I'll miss this. Sucks for me... But, you guys have fund and take some great pics.

Sounds interesting! I only have on-camera flash, so I might be limited as the light wanes, but it sounds like a cool location, regardless.

Date: Sat 27th July. 4pm. Starbucks at Cascade Village Mall (by World Market).

    July 11, 2013

  • Tom R.

OK. Sat 27th it is. If we leave Bend at, say, 3pm we get there around 4:30pm so we can maybe get some nice evening light. There are three mines (that I know of) so we can spend an hour or more at each of them. Bring a snack. I'll bring a cooler and a couple of beers. I'll also bring a stove and some water so we can brew up a cup of tea. Does that sound like a plan?

Yes, yes, this all sounds really fun! Thanks so much for organizing this Tom!

      July 9, 2013

Having visited the Ochoco mines in full daylight - i have a feeling that it could be very rewarding to photograph them in evening light - or even at night. I'd be willing to leave later and stay later - until dark - if you guys are up for it. Let me know.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking too... probably get some very interesting shots! I'm game!

I am thinking of doing this on the afternoon/evening of either Sat 27th or Sun 28th July. Any preferences?

Looks like i got my days confused ;P

    July 8, 2013

I'd be able to attend on either one of those days Tom, with a slight preference for Saturday the 27th.

    July 8, 2013

    This looks super cool!

    July 7, 2013

OK. Let's see how many people are interested. Then I will e-mail those that have signed up to work out a convenient date and time.

(Sorry Tom, I can't utilize the email feature on this site for some reason. I want to attend, as long as it's a date that I'm available. Keep me in the loop! ~Penny)
