Night traffic seen from a highway bridge. I took this photograph using my Ricoh point-and-shoot. I cheated - just a little - by using one of the "scence" modes. This one is "toy mode" which introduces a blurring at the top and bottom of the image.

Is that cheating if you use the resources or settings you have on your camera, rather than using the manual setting? Your Ricoh is better then some DSLR I've seen... That setting looks like your lens is a little fogged up.

Cheating? No. Every photograph is a distorted 2-D visual representation of an instant in time in a dynamic 3-D world. Whatever you do, your camera manipulates the image. I used one of the camera's filters to create an effect that, to my eye, re-creates the essence of motion that was a very big part of the real 3-D scene but is lost completely in a simple photograph. I could possibly have achieved a similar effect by using a very wide aperture - to give a tiny depth of field - and by vertically panning the camera - to keep the truck in focus. But I didn't have $3000 worth of DSLR in my pocket and I didn't have 60 minutes to set up the shot. So this is my Ricoh's best attempt. And I think it has the "feel" of standing on a footbridge over the highway in Gwangju on a damp night. :-)

The lens is not fogged up. It was a damp and drizzly sub-tropical evening in Gwangju Korea - just before Typhoon Sanba hit.

I assumed you felt you cheated using a "scene mode" which that one made a good effect. $3,000! Dang, I bought used cars less than that. :)

This is a fun shot, Tom. I thought that might have been the "miniature" mode on your Ricoh. Some of these electronic filters work in creative and artistic ways.

Looks like you used a Lensbaby or Tilt Shift lens. Good results with just a "scene" on your point and shoot.
