Header A Shallow Pulse: Breathing New Life into the
Concept of Federalism
Join Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll and State Senators Mike Doherty and Joe Pennacchio at AFP Foundation’s State of the Union Town Hall!
President Reagan once remarked, “The federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government.” In a word, President Reagan believed in the framers’ concept of federalism. Today, those of us in the conservative movement abhor the fact that the federal government has usurped the authority of states to make their own choices in far too many areas of public policy. Many of the powers that were intended to remain with the states or the people have been incrementally ceded to the Washington elite and an army of authoritarian bureaucrats in their quest to establish the left’s nanny state utopia. If America is to return to prosperity, the concept of federalism needs to be re-established. States should have the authority to create, shape and implement public policy without interference from federal do-gooders who think they know better than you, me, and those who represent us in Trenton. In sum, the 50 states should be laboratories of public policy experimentation: adopting the policy approaches that have worked well in other states and dispensing with the ones which are failing. Join AFP Foundation for our State of the Union Town Hall event, including a special panel discussion on federalism! State lawmakers know better than anyone what the erosion of federalism means to states and what it means to citizens. That’s why AFP Foundation is pleased to announce that several prominent New Jersey lawmakers will be with us at our State of the Union Town Hall in Parsippany to discuss this important issue, including Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll (R-25), Sen. Mike Doherty (R-23) and Sen. Joe Pennacchio (R-26) ! These three legislators will offer their unique perspective and insights on this topic and they will explain just how they have to grapple with the heavy hand of Washington DC on the policy issues of the day. Asm. Carroll, Sen. Doherty and Sen. Pennacchio will also take on the question of whether the GOP is enabling President Obama’s economic policy agenda! AFP Foundation also has a terrific Economic Policy Panel Discussion on tap to be led by our State Policy Manager, Nicole Kaeding. Nicole will lead a dynamic discussion on economic policy, fiscal policy and what you and I can expect with negotiations coming up on the federal budget, sequestration spending cuts and the debt ceiling! All in all, this is stacking up to be a great night to discuss the State of the Union address and economic policies for our nation! As always, space is limited and the event is filling up fast! So, be sure to reserve your seat now! Consistent with his Inauguration speech, President Obama is expected to use the State of the Union address to set forth a number of big-government economic policies that are unsustainable and have been proven to fail in the past. Let’s take this opportunity to educate Americans about the true path to prosperity: Economic Freedom!
