I want to be a part of East Bay Area Berkeley/ Oakland ASL Meet up because I want to further my exposure and involvement within the Deaf Community. I also want to make more Deaf and Hard of Hearing friends.
I would like East Bay Area Berkeley/Oakland ASL Meet up at coffee shops, restuaraunts, the movies, etc. Anywhere that is a casual socializing area.
I have always had an interest in sign lanuage, even before I started signing. I took my first ASL class as a junior in high scool. I remember one day an interpreter named Patrick Kelly came to visit our class. At first he was only signing and then he started to speak spanish. I did not realize it at the time, but he was hearing. Once I saw him signign and talking (SimCom) I just had the biggest realization that what I saw him doing was exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After that I started taking more ASL classes and learning about the Culture (which I still am). Since then, that has been my goal. Now I am currently studying ASL level 4 and will apply to the IPP program in the near future.

Hello, My name is Maya Garnes and I am currently studying ASL at Ohlone College. I chose ASL as my major because I want to become an interpreter. By joining this group I am hoping to improve my basic skills and meet new people while also having fun.
