Dinner at Souley Vegan

Hi, fellow plant munchers,

UPDATE: Souley Vegan's credit card machine broke, so the night of our event will be cash only. Please come prepared.

We haven't been to Souley Vegan in a while, and it's a popular place with this group, so let's go back.

As you probably know by now, Souley Vegan is a vegan soul food restaurant. On the menu are Southern-fried and BBQ and 5-Spice tofu, burgers, yams, greens, lentils, mac and "cheese," potato salad, combo platters, and a bunch more. In other words, Southern comfort food. Yum! The portions are generous and it's all delicious. One time I ordered a large combo meal, and it came on two plates! I felt like Henry VIII.

Here's something you may not know: Souley Vegan sells Grab and Go prepared foods at the restaurant, plus at Berkeley Bowl and a few other venues. Now they're looking to greatly expand the availability of their prepared foods line, into Whole Foods and even nationwide. And they could use our help. Check out their fundraising campaign and consider helping out this local, minority- and woman-owned vegan business, as I have.

Please don't respond unless/until you're sure you can make it. And if your plans change, please change your response at least a day in advance so someone else can come.

When you arrive, check in with me so I can mark you "present" and give you a name tag, and chip in a couple bucks to reimburse me for Meetup fees and to help keep the group going (you can also pay on the Meetup site). Thanks a bunch.

See you at dinner,
John

I wasn't keen on the food, but maybe I just don't like seaweed!

It was their first night of full table service, so there were some glitches. But the food, as always, was terrific.

Anyone walking to BART afterwards? I'd feel safer with an escort.

Sorry, I'm no longer able to attend. I caught a little bug. Ask around! I'm sure someone else will be walking back to BART.

John, I clicked "Yes" when I got the notification on my iPhone yesterday but for some reason I don't see myself on the list. For this reason I put myself on the waiting list. I hope I'm just not reading the site correctly and that I'm actually on the list. I love this restaurant and would love the join this group again!

From what I've heard from several members, Meetup.com has some technical glitches. I expect that your response will eventually get moved to the yes list anyway, so feel free to come.

Do we need to book this?

    • John

If you mean make a reservation, Marion, no. I always make the reservation before I announce my events.

I just corrected the menu link in the description. (I'm sorry for the error.) Ignore the first group of menu items on their site, which apply to Christmas last year. But good to know they're open for Christmas. I may keep them in mind for our December event.

My experience with the food and service at SV has been mixed. I keep hoping that the quality of the food would get better but it seems to be going the opposite direction. I won't even comment of the service...but I hope you have a great time!

I've been going since I moved here and I love it! I think if you expect it to be a restaurant where the servers are at your hand and foot then you will be disappointed. It's not that kind of place and I'm glad it isn't, I've been a waitress before and it's a tough job! I like the way they have it set up. The Mac and cheese is my fave!!!!

I actually like or want to like this place and wish them all the best. The food can be or has been quite good. Their prices with a Goupon maybe makes up for some things that might be lacking. The last 2 times we went they forgot to put in our order so that can be irritating and/or karmic. Whatever....

I have been to this place and the food is excellent, especially the grits. Hope you all enjoy!
