AT Backpacking Trip Route 325 to Route 645 (26 Miles)

From the meet-up point we will head to the trailhead south of Swatara Gap.  We will park the remaining cars at RT 325 and hike north on the AT... The hike starts with a 1,000 ft climb out of Clarks Valley, and from there it is a lot of ridge walking.  11 miles in we come to the Rausch Gap Shelter (.21 miles from trail).  We have one small accent of 500 ft before we start to descend back to the cars...

The total mileage for Saturday is about 15.5 miles.  At this point those who dont want to camp out can drive into town (Lickdale, there is a best wetsern and comfort in there).  Those braving the cold will shuttle to 501 shelter and sleep there.

On Sunday morning I will drive back to 443 and meet those hikers who dont camp. We will leave teir cars there and I will drive them back to 501. We will then hike south to Swatara Gap Total miles on Sunday approximately 11.  Most of it is a ridge walk until we decend into Swatara Gap.

When I was in the airport yesterday I felt a pop in the bottom of my foot when I made a small step. The doc thinks I may have torn the plantar fascia and suggest I don't push it :-( I need to try and protect being ready for my cross country ride so I will take his advice. I have been having trouble with plantar fasciitis for awhile but this is the first time I have had something snap like that. Have fun in the cold without me. Maybe I will camp outside in the backyard tomorrow night ... or maybe I will just stay in my warm bed :-)

Mark said thanks for the heads up. Sorry about the foot problems. That's a bummer!. Rest it and follow doctors orders. Hope to see you on the trail soon.

Doctor or not, I will make the hike on the 7th for your PA celebration. Ever seen someone hike on crutches? Have fun this weekend.

Would any of you still wanting to camp on Saturday night be opposed to day hiking and then heading to the 501 Shelter Saturday Night? The 501 shelter is literally .2 miles from the road... We stayed there last weekend... Another group from that area has already canceled their trip as some reports now have temps below 0. We would hike from swatara gap South bound on Saturday, and then hike from 645 to Swatara Gap on Sunday... I already have a plan to minimize the shuttling that would need to take place. If no one is oppposed, I will post the finalized itinerary tonight...

I can imagine it is a challenge. Still not sure if I should push the foot. I will let you know.

I'm good to around 15 with my current gear. I'm thinking of getting a new bag if I can find one. I drive a AWD Subaru Legacy, fits four comfortably but we can cram 5 in if needed. I prefer to camp out over night. (Hopefully I have time and can find a 0 bag)

Assuming my bag comes on time I'll be camping out. I got a 0 degree today.

      January 22, 2014

I am still good for camping down to zero degrees. Never done it but I think I am good. Just please get us to camp before dark. I am in TX until Thur so it will be a shocker. It would be nice if we had a lot of snow so I could build an igloo.

The back and sides of my knees are still in a funk from last weekend, if they aren't ok by Thursday I'm gonna hop out and let someone take my spot.

But!! Hoping for the best! Icing and ibuprofen now!

Otherwise I'm good to 15, and I have room for 5 in my car. :)

I've been out down to 5 degrees overnight, I should be fine at 11. I drive a jeep unlimited that will hold at least 4 adults, 5 if necessary. I wonder if this area is affected by todays snow storm? I definitely want to camp.

I sent everyone an email.... For those who may not have received it, Im asking you to post your comfort zone for backpacking (in degrees) as well your type of vehicle and number of total people you could shuttle... I'm working out a plan for anyone who would rather day hike... THANKS

would anyone be willing to share stoves? I usually use an alcohol cat can style but the fuel doesn't heat well in the cold. I'll bring my own pot still.

I saw Andy's original reply an referenced it in mine. It is past the eggnog season but I was snow shoeing yesterday with a guy who gave me the recipe make mead. I might try it and bring some on the trip. If I do, I am going to make you guys help carry it so leave a spot in your bag :).

I have updated the map to show the correct meeting place... If you are heading east on 325 the parking is on the right.... On Saturday we will have a relatively flat hike for the first 8 miles before we descend into Swatara Gap. We then have a climb out of Swatara Gap that at times can be a bit steep. After gaining about 800 ft we once again descend until we hit the Rausch Gap Shelter..

There is no water unti we hit Swatara Gap, so plan accordingly.

On Sunday we have a small climb out of the shelter, followed by a flat hike until the final descent into 325. Weather permiting we will spend a little time at Yellow Spring Village and ole mining settlement. (my only time through this area we camped near this spot.. it is pretty neat)...

The only thing that will cause this hike to be canceled is if icy roads prevent me from getting up there from VA.

I look forward to hiking with you al!!!!!
