Let's go to the new 'the Wednesday' at the Kulturbrauerei!

Over the many months of hosting these Meetups and  getting feedback, I've found out what is really  important for our membership, and what is not.

In a nutshell what I've found is that a lot of people would like to get out on a regular basis, in a safe environment, and not only get to meet new people, but to also see familiar faces and catch up with friends made along the way. So, I spent a huge amount of time and effort trying to figure out how to do a recurring event like this and I think I've got it-

I am very happy to announce - in conjunction with Charles Clawson, the Founder and manager of the super popular "Boat Party on the Spree" - a new regular Wednesday get together in the "Soda Club" in the Kulturbrewerai in Prenzlauer Berg!

Normally this is a multi-floor / multi room place that parties on the weekend, but they are going to let Charles use them for his weekly[masked] person event (now in its 9th year running). He'd like us to join him too. There is always going to be a large crowd of friendly people there from his list of regular (so don't just go by the RSVP count here) and we can probably initially have our own area to circle up in before spreading out and meeting everyone else.

As you may know, Charles' event also has a language component to it and he and I are working together to beef this up and make it even better. We're looking at having teachers walking around fostering conversation in different languages and if you'd like to practice something, just join a group. This would be in the 7pm - 8pm timeframe give or take.

And as the night wears on, we'll either have our own performers there to play for us (just like on the Boat or at Ressort) or let the club turn on their regular music - this will be a work in progress. Please feel free to provide feedback about any of this as it will be listened to and acted on!

Considering the location, Charles' history, our attendance, the language component, and the never ending supply of new people with new energy and ideas, this is going to soon become a Berlin Institution!

Cheers,

Chris

Fun evening with a lot of interesting people and opportunity to practice languages. Great location, too!

Hi,I have a question: The language exchange group which combined with the meetup last night - what is the name of their group? They told me it is organised via meetup and also facebook. I want to join their group too, since I made friends with a few people who do not seem to be in the members list of this meetup event. I have looked around the language exchange groups in Berlin on both facebook and meetup but have not found it... Any help would be much appreciated :D Thank you

Mark, I see exactly the same way.
And I say that as a German native speaker.
I really had everything last night:
I had a lot of fun, I had language exchange in English AND in German, and I met like-minded people ... many known and unknown faces ... I met a German lady with the same passion for dance as I ... and we talked in part in GERMAN ... Yes why not?
For my part I found the evening great.
Thanks to Chris and everyone who was involved!

It was a lot of fun, thanks Chris. About the language exchange, to each his own. I have the opinion that there are already enough language exchange meetups (including one at Caras cafe on the same day) + I can practice my German anywhere but I can't meet likeminded people and make friends on the street or at the döner shop. my 2 cents.

I was surprised to read about the idea of reducing or eliminating the language exchange portion. To me, this is the defining theme of the event and its essential component. It is natural that events like these evolve more into a party later in the night, and that's cool. However, I think it would be nice to keep the theme 'language exchange' going as long as possible, and starting with loud music (live or dj) would be disturbing.
A few days ago, I read about the idea of having some language instructors at the event who would help keep up conversations if necessary and support the language exchange. That seemed like a great idea to me!
The event would no longer be interesting to me without the language exchange portion. What would be the special appeal of this event without it? I could just go to any other bar or club.

    I enjoyed my night :)
Was a nice and casual atmosphere, as I'm used to the language party.
    I'll be back next week!

Too bad the bar refused to do the drink credit after the first 100 people, that took Charles and me by surprise

We've booked a live music act for 10pm. Initially we'll hang outside on the terrace and join language groups if interested. At the night goes on we can move inside and ultimately have the band play for us - should be great!

      I think this likewise!
      Wow ... and more than 100 people ... :))
But I'm afraid, unfortunately I have to leave early, shortly after the music starts ... that makes me a little bit sad ...

    Thank you Chris,
I hope I can be on time at the Brauerei, as I have a meeting at 6pm in Neukölln.

    Cheers!

Oh, and we'll be gathering up outside on the terrace - don't go inside the club before checking in with me. We'll go inside later if they get a dance party going :)

Hey Chris! Looking forward to finally meeting you and the rest of the BSAE group on Wednesday! Just to let you and everyone know, I will be running a group of tables with activities for people who want to practice English. Just look for the "English" signs (probably just inside the first room). There will also be tables set up for people who want to practice other languages (German, Italian, Spanish, French, etc.), in addition to those who just want to hang out. Looking forward to it!

Hi everyone - great news, the admission fee that goes to paying for the venue and the live music will also give you a €2 euro bar/drink credit. Sign in with me when you arrive as I've been asked to collect the $ (it goes to Charles) and I will have the drink tokens. I will be the tall guy in a black pullover, jeans and black sneakers. Jeans and sneakers thanks to my shopping assistants :)

    Cool, I am in!
You can recognise Chris from his baseball hat and pullover :-)

    Cheers!

How can I Identify any one in this group if I come around???

    August 26, 2013

  • Chris

To avoid confusion, there is no free access to the Soda Club on any night, there is a nominal 2 or 3 euros charge at the door collected by the other organizer to cover his costs

Sounds like a great collaboration! I'm looking forward to it. I'm an English teacher and run my own language meetup groups too, so if you want any feedback or brainstorming for the "Language Exchange" section of the evening, let me know!
