If there's one thing Germany does well - besides cars and beers and such - is Christmas. I guess while Clement Clarke Moore and Charles Dickens gave Christmas the shot in the arm it needed to take over America, the imaging and structure for "The Christmas Spirit" comes from Germany. Where would we be without Oh Tannenbaum, St Nicholas, presents, treats and glühwein?
To top off creating Christmas, Germany also has these Christmas markets which, if you haven't seen them, are amazing. What steroids are to weight lifting, Christmas markets are to Christmas.
Sure, sure, in any mall in America you can get your picture taken with Santa and buy tinsel and such, but in Germany there are these outdoor markets where carefully constructed mini outdoor structures are brought in to sell various gift items made by craftsmen, hot food cooked on the spot, and not only warm glühwein, but also beer on tap wherever you look. You can do a good chunk of your christmas shopping in one night while also having your fill of Christmas music, sights, sounds, and smells. And at this market you can ".. wander the booths or visit the heated craftsmen tent where you can watch toymakers, goldsmiths, and wood carvers at work. There is also a stage where musicians, dancers, jugglers, and acrobats keep you and the children entertained."
So - let's meet up and check out Berlin's most famous Christmas Market!
