It's time to dust off those hiking boots & head out for our Full Moon Hike in South Mountain.  Teri Ann has been leading this hike for the GROUP, as well as her meetup group for over 4 years now.  Come on out for a great fitness hike, meet wonderful people, stuff our faces afterwards & help a great cause.  We have had anywhere from 4 hikers, all the way up to 40 hikers participating in the FMH.

Full Moon Hike: Please get there on time, as we will be leaving no later than 6:45 pm

Mileage: 3.8 miles

Elevation Gain: Approximately 586 feet

Trails: Javelina; Ridgeline; & Beverly Canyon (loop Hike)

Trail Rating: 2-3

Dogs: You may bring your dog, but must be leased & able to hike elevation gain. (bring poo bags)

Trail Details: We will start on the west side of the parking lot on the Javelina Trail.  We will hike 1.8 miles before our first break, where Javelina meets the Ridgeline Trail.  This is a good warmup for what is to come after our break.

After our break, we begin our climb up the Ridgeline with 3 summits. Summit #2 seems to be the steepest up. We will break @ each summit if need be.  After each stop, you are more than welcome to take pictures of the awesome moon.  The best spot, normally is stop #3.  After ooohing and awwwwwing the moon, downtown, etc., we will then begin our descent off the Ridgeline. This part of the hike can be quite slippery due to the loose gravel on the trail/rocks, so please watch your step during the descent. Once we are off the Ridgeline trail, we will head North on the Beverly Canyon Trail (under the power lines) and head back to the parking lot. This part of the trail has some embedded rocks with gravel on it, as well as hiking through a wash area. We will pass some condos on the right & then head into the parking lot.

What to bring: Plenty of Water.  NO LESS THAN 1 LITER, good hiking shoes, snacks, a camera to capture the beautiful moon (we use the trail markers as tripods). Some hikers like to bring flashlights, and that's fine.  However, between the full moon and the city lights, we have never had difficulties seeing the trail, unless it's very cloudy. If you do use a flashlight, please be considerate of the person behind you by not blinding them :--)

Directions: Take I-10 to 48th Street & head South to Baseline and turn right (west) or I-10 West to Baseline and get off on Baseline Road. Head West till 46th Street and make a left (south). Now, you will come to a point in the road where it appears to be a driveway. It is not. It is part of the street. Drive all the way till the road ends and park in the 2nd parking lot on the left.

Please Note: Do not park in the 1st left parking lot. This is a business lot and you may be towed. If our parking lot is full, you may park along the street.

We might see some wildlife, as well. We have encountered rattlers, coyotes, and even Javelenas. During one of our hikes, a pack of coyotes actually crossed the trail, less than 10 feet in front of us. The main thing to remember is you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Remember, know your strength and weaknesses on the trail. If you're a beginner, take your time on the trail. We normally have a sweeper in the back, to ensure that everyone is safe. The group is never allowed to break off, we stick together always. I am trained & certified as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and Emergency Animal Medical Technician I (EAMT I), so my pack might be larger than the rest of yours. The first and foremost thing about a hike, especially a full moon hike, is safety comes first. We will be joined, by other Meetup groups as well. See you on the trail

Possible Dinner @ Gallagher's or Roosters Roost:

Gallagher's is a nice place to have dinner, watch sports, listen to their Karaoke singers (some bad, some good)

Roosters Roose: We can also do drinks/dinner @ Roosters Roost.

See you on the trail Teri Ann[masked]

This is Martha, who recently passed away. She was loved and taken care of by Karen of Mingus Manor Animal Sanctuary.  Karen can't take care of these senior and special needs pets on her own.  Won't you consider making some type of donation to help this manor keep going?

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
