Let's discuss Beloved by Toni Morrison

There was a tie for the tie breaker so we are reading both: one for February and one for March.

Goodreads says about Beloved:

Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement by Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison.

Nicolle et al, I will be away from Toledo between for most of Jan thru May, but this is a great choice and I know you'll have a wonderful discussion. Please keep me on the list and I'll see you all when I'm back.

SUCH a great book. I would put it in my top ten. In fact, years ago, when TM got the Nobel, and a buncha Harold Bloomites wrote that it was an expedient choice since she was a black woman (ie, not cause her writing/storytelling/morality is fabulous) I had a piece in the Blade about how wrongheaded they were (which got me lots of kudos with English teachers ;--). I also saw her in person (how cliched is this?) at the bar at the Algonquin Hotel in NYC. God, she was regal looking ;--)
