Mark your calendars for Beyond Adventure's Catskills Backpacking Weekend.

The Hike:

We will take advantage of the longer days this late June weekend affords by hiking Friday night to the campsite.  On Saturday we will ascend Cornell, Slide and Wittenberg peaks, all over 3500 feet.  Sunday will be a mellow hike back to the parking lot.

Details:

Be prepared for hiking at night with a headlamp, and scrambling up steep ascents with a full backpack.

There are no lean-tos among this route, so be prepared to sleep in a tent each night.

The tentative plan is to drive up Friday night and park at the lot off of CR-47. We will then hike 1.5 miles to Giant Ledge and camp there for the night. Saturday morning we will continue clockwise toward Woodland Valley campground. We will summit Wittenberg and Cornell and then setup camp in the col between Cornell and Slide. The total distance Saturday will be ~9.5 -10 miles. Sunday we begin with a steep ascent up Slide, the tallest peak in the Catskills and then continue to CR-47 where we will hike along the road back to the parking lot clocking in about 5.5 miles.

Here's a description of the hike:

From the Panther Mountain parking area on Rt 47 (hairpin turn on CR47 GPS N[masked] W[masked]), cross the road and get on the yellow blazed Phoenicia - East Branch Trail. At 0.7 miles you will reach the intersection with Panther/Giant Ledge trail going to your left, where you will see a few campsites, this is the primary camping spot for Friday night. If this is full, we will head up 0.75 miles on the Panther trail to another primitive campsites location. Saturday morning we will continue to follow the yellow-blazed Phoenicia - East Branch trail from the intersection for 3.4 miles to the parking area in Woodland Valley. From Woodland Valley follow the red markers through the campsites to the bridge over the stream and to the red-blazed trail. Immediately the trail gives you a hint of what is to come. There is an ascent to even get to the log book! After 3.9 miles of ascent including some interesting rock scrambles, you arrive at the top of Wittenberg Mountain. Wittenberg offers one of the finest lookout in the Catskills and is well worth the effort. The trail now descends into the col between Wittenberg and Cornell and then ascends to the summit of Cornell, a total distance of only .85 miles. Be sure to take the short spur trail to the left at the top of Cornell to actually reach the highest point on the mountain. The trail now descends to the col between Cornell and Slide which is reached after about 1.4 miles, this is where we will camp Saturday night. Sunday morning, we begin the steep climb up Slide. As you begin, look to the right as you ascend the rock and wood "staircases". A short trail leads to a spring which also affords a nice view back at Cornell. After about .85 miles from the col, you will be at the Slide Mountain lookout. From here you can return the way you came but this would mean hiking five 3500's in one day! You can continue on the trail for about 2.85 miles to the Slide Mountain parking area on the Frost Valley Road. From here you will need to hike 2 miles on the road back to the Panther Mountain parking area at the hairpin turn passed Winisook Lake.

I can make it there pretty early and do recon on the campsites before dark if anyone wants to meet me. If you need a ride and can leave early, I will be leaving Peekskill around 5:45pm, meaning you would need to get the 4:45pm Poughkeepsie train from Grand Central and I would pick you up in Peekskill.

Tragically, I might have to sit this one out. Been sick all week with a sore throat, cough and fever. If by some miracle I can recover in time, I will meet up tomorrow morning. This has been a bad year for missing my own meetups :(

I'm sorry to bail but I was sick this week and although I feel better now, still don't feel like I can confidently go on this trip. Have fun!

I'm driving Jennifer and Caroline. Still have room for one more. Pickup in Brooklyn or east side of Manhattan.

    June 27, 2013

    • Bill

That should be fine. I could pick up you and Eva either in Gramercy or around 61st St.

      June 27, 2013

    • Jennifer M.

I can be around 61 st or any place that will be on your way. I work in 34st, 7ave

      June 27, 2013

  • Bill

I think I will arrive at the trail head around 8:30 or 9pm tomorrow. If anyone would rather go a little earlier, you can arrange to meet Raeford. He will arrive early and scope out a camping spot. Organize with him directly to meet, but post here if you will go early so we don't wait for you at the trail head.

I will be coming Sat morning with Nate (Nathan) and Nayra, I will meet you guys at 10 am at the intersection of the PB East trail and the PG/GL trail (which is a good change where you guys will be camping anyway fri night)

My backpacking tent was stolen 2 months ago and I don't want to use my 3 person alone. Would anyone like to share a tent? Yours or mine is fine.

    June 25, 2013

    • Timothy

Campmor sells an ENO one link system for $190 I might pick up. It's a doublenest, tarp, bug net & straps.

      June 27, 2013

    • Raja

Sounds like a good deal, since the hammock itself is usually $60, the tarp $80, the straps $25, and the bug net $60...I paid $48 for the doublenest hammock, $22 for straps and $58 for the tarp, need a bug net still

    • Caroline

      Thank you Bill!!

      June 25, 2013

All, as Raja pointed out, we need reservations to camp at Woodland Valley. Since this is a backpacking trip I would prefer not to camp there, so we will either hike in a bit Friday night and find a place to camp, or head up Saturday morning and start from there. If anyone is familiar with the loop and knows of a good camping spot ~2 miles from the parking, let me know. I'll update the post tomorrow night.

    June 25, 2013

  • Bill

I can drive 2. Leaving from Brooklyn.

    June 24, 2013

    • Jennifer M.

      Sure, im in. Brooklyn where?

      June 24, 2013

    • Bill

Leaving from Ditmas Park and making a stop in Sunset Park.

      June 25, 2013

  • Raja

Hey wait, Bill so this is starting Friday night and NOT sat AM?? I thought we were meeting at woodland valley campground on Sat AM? Do we have a reservation at Woodland Valley?

    June 24, 2013

    • Bill

Hey Raja, original plan was to hike in a mile or 2 Friday night and camp somewhere. I am going to figure out the full plan and update tomorrow. Last time I did this was in winter and Woodland Valley was closed, so we camped near the parking lot Friday night.

    June 17, 2013

  • Bill

I reduced the maximum number of people since permits are required for groups of 10 or more with a maximum of 12 for back country camping.

    June 4, 2013

    • Raja

How do we get a permit?

      June 11, 2013

    • Bill

Need to get it in person from a ranger. Haven't ever done it myself though...
