Ski/Snowboard Stowe 2 day weekend! (January 3-5, 2014)

  • Jan 3, 2014 · 11:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

My 5th year and 3rd time organizing... the annual first trip of the New Year!

Stowe is a premier resort in the Northeast with the best terrain and consistent snow (located in Northern Vermont and getting moisture from the nearby Lake Champlain).  Last year we had terrific conditions in both early January and early March.  Even when it may be rainy in the area, Mt Mansfield (highest peak in Vermont) is at such a high elevation, snow is sure to be found.

Basic Package

• 2 nights lodging (based on double occupancy) at the Mountaineer Inn

• Add $90 for single room

• Deduct $15 for triple

• Deduct $25 for quad occ.

• 2 day all lift ticket at Stowe (regular price is $98 per day!)

• 2 Hot Breakfasts!

The Mountaineer Inn has nice amenities including a sauna, pool and large hot tub.  There is also a free shuttle from the town to the mountain with many stops among the access road.  One of the stops is directly across the street from the Inn making it easy to get around.

Cost

• Early Bird Price (until November 6th): $230 + $7 paypal

• Regular Price (until December 6th): $250 + $8 paypal

• Late Price (after December 6th): $270 + $8 paypal

Payment can be made here (on Meetup) via PayPal where you wind up paying the fee.  Or it can made directly at PayPal.com (to [masked]).  If you use PayPal and select personal payment - other, you will not have to pay the fee.  Once I see payment has been made, I will update your status.  You can also send me a check.  PM me for my address.

Payment Deadline is December 17th at 4pm.  This is also when RSVPs close.  I'll be sending payments to the outfitter at Noon, so please have your payments in!

 Additional Details:

Transportation: We will carpool. Stowe is a 6 hour drive from NYC. Passengers pick up all the gas/toll tabs plus other expenses like coffee, drivers (car owners, not literal drivers) go free. We still encourage helping with driving, but it won't relieve you from paying for gas/tolls - car owners are putting up some serious mileage on their cars, so this is the least we could do in return.  And if you're a driver, please don't charge your passengers extra.

Rental Equipment: The Mountaineer Inn is adjacent to Pinnacle Sports which rents everything from skis, snowboards, helmets and pants.  Pinnacle has some online coupons here: www.pinnacleskisports.com/pinn10coupon.pdf

RSVP: Please RSVP only if you are firm on going.  In the comment field state your status, e.g. who you are rooming with, who you are driving with.  I will check paypal to see who has paid.  Also, please answer ALL of the RSVP questions; this will help me to coordinate rides and answer questions for the outfitter

On/Off Mountain Meetups:

• Saturday, 10:30am top of the Mansfield gondola (near the waffle cabin) for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders

• Saturday, 1pm at The Great Grill Room (Spruce Camp base) for lunch

• Saturday 4:15 pm at the Matterhorn Bar & Restaurant (4969 Mountain Rd) for Après Ski

• Sunday 12pm at the Octagon (top of the FourRunner Quad) for lunch

• Sunday 4:45 at Cabot Cheese Annex, 5:15pm at Ben & Jerry's (on the way home)

It was great seeing some familiar faces from last year as well as a bunch of new faces! It was my 3rd day snowboarding ever and I definitely took a huge leap in progression thanks to all the tips and pointers from you nice folks. Thanks everyone for the fun!

Everyone get home safe? I hit ice on I-91 last night and immediately lifted off the gas pedal. In a few minutes we saw 5-7 individual accidents. It was like a war zone.

    January 6, 2014

    • JoAnna

That's crazy! We didn't hit any ice on the way home. Must have gotten icy right after we went through since we left a bit before you.

      1 · January 6, 2014

    • Frank

Yeah, we were fine as well. We left earlier, they were spreading a lot of salt when we were going down 91.

hey everybody.. I am going to do a little hike to the summit of Mt Mansfield tomorrow (from the gondola).. email me if interested.. it should only take maybe 1 hour round trip (in the middle of the skiing day)

For Saturday night, Après Ski at the Matterhorn goes from about 3-5pm. I recommend going directly there from the mountain and not showering or anything. There is no shuttle, so you'd have to jump in someone's car. After 5pm the party kind of dies out as most people are stopping there on their way back from the mountain. If the snow is real good and you don't think you'll make it by 4:30, I recommend passing on it, and going straight to the hot tub :)

Found a ride! (thanks Max). Now I need a place to stay :) Anyone interested in adding me to their room-share? I can have them add a cot to the room (will of course split room cost). If not, no worries - will stay at nearby hotel and join up for all festivities. There's a shuttle bus that's pretty good in the area so getting around is easy. See everyone on the slopes or in the sauna...

Hello all - joining this trip fairly late. Anyone have a ride available? I can leave tonite. If tomorrow afternoon, my friend Emilie would also love to join us (so room for 2 would be great). Will take care of all gas/tolls of course and can help with driving if needed. OR if someone can help drive (manual trans), we can take my car.

Heading up on Thurs night - can offer a ride up/back

    January 1, 2014

    • Mina

Hello - I'm tagging along on this trip a bit late. Would love a ride to/from and can leave tonite (Thursday). Please let me know if you have room and where/what time you'd like to pick-up. I live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and am flexible about pickup time (will need advance 3 hour notice to do final packing/travelling).

Leaving early on Friday afternoon. Driving with Mahesh and Christine. See you guys in Stowe!

    December 31, 2013

  • Bryan

Looks like it's going to be absolutely frigid on Friday with a very high chance of significant snowfall. Should make for a killer weekend, but make sure you all drive safely!

    December 31, 2013

  • Timothy

Seems we have a large shortage of NYC drivers on this trip. I'd love to see suburban drivers step up and help out with rides. I usually recommend that urban passengers meet drivers in Greenwich CT as it is easiest for all.

    December 30, 2013

  • Aisha

Concerned about the blizzard conditions predicted for Friday and the drive up! Anyone leaving earlier in the day? We're also considering renting an SUV. Would anyone be interested in going in on this?

Hello everyone. Just heard about this trip through a friend and would like to join in the fun. However, I'm looking for a ride. Does anyone have room for 1 + a board??

    December 27, 2013

    • JoAnna

I have room but am leaving from Yonkers and am taking the Metro North from Grand Central Friday at 5:15 (it's a 30 min ride)

      1 · December 27, 2013

    • Wendy H.

Hey JoAnna, thanks for the response! I'm going to message you directly...

Hi everyone - Andrew and I have the day off so are free to leave as early or late as others are ready. I saw that the Mountaineer Inn is also pet friendly - anyone have any experience bringing their dog up there?

  • patricia

Hi, ok. What time do people anticipate leaving on the 3rd? I realized I am working til3:30 ish ( I can try to adjust this)

    December 3, 2013

    • Timothy

Patricia, people leave at all different times. I'll throw together a spreadsheet to see who is driving, from where and when.

      December 4, 2013

  • patricia

Does anyone have room & willing for 2 more passengers? ( & 1 snowboard) ?

    December 1, 2013

    • Timothy

I'll start figuring out driving situations in a few days. I am sure there are plenty of people that can give rides.

I heard Stowe was amazing yesterday with a foot of natural powder. If you don't believe go to Facebook and check out their pics! I had a friend go there and he said while it was bone chilling cold, the snow was amazing. Can't wait for this trip!
