Camping at North-South Lake in Catskills NY w/ Many Hiking & Lake Activities

North-South Lake is the largest and most popular state campground in the historic beautiful Catskills Mountains of NYS, and for good reason. In addition to the 2250 foot high elevation lake, the immediate surrounding area offers extraordinary scenic beauty, and historical sites, such as: Alligator Rock, Sunset Rock, Overlook Rock, Kaaterskill Falls, and the former site of the Catskill Mountain House. The provinces around the lakes have long provided visitors with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside. It is said that on a clear day, five states can be viewed from the escarpment.

The North-South Lake area is not only the beginning of the recreational history of the Catskills, but "America's First Wilderness." Artists were first lured to this area to capture the surreal scenery for their paintings in the 1800s. We will camp in this area, and you may choose to hike to nearby popular sites such as Artist Rock, Sunset Rock, Boulder Rock, Split Rock, Alligator Rock, and also Kaaterskill Falls, the highest two-tiered waterfall in NYS. You may enjoy other leisurely activities in the area as well, including lake activities such as boating (kayak/canoe rentals available), fishing (NYS license required), and swimming. North Lake has a beach area as well as a recreational sports area.

In addition to all that, this time of the year will offer FALL FOLIAGE!

This will be car camping, one night Saturday Sept 15th, arriving Sat at 11 am, leaving Sunday afternoon. Two adjacent campsites are booked, with a max capacity of 6 people and 2 cars per site. Campground facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, water filling stations, trailer dump station. Equipment will be typical of any car camping trip, including having a tent, sleeping bag, light source, and other camping amenities you wish to bring. Food will be cooked on a campfire or a camping stove if you choose to bring one. Everyone will be responsible for contributing to food. Firewood is available for sale at campground, and strict firewood policies are in place here.

How does Silvia dropping affect this trip?

    September 14, 2012

    • Raja

She had a work event come up last minute. No prob at all. Michelle car just freed up a spot tho so now she only has 2 people in her car. Other than that has no substantial effect, except that I'll have to make the pancakes now :)

Shouldn't everything from a 99 cent store be less than a dollar? Sounds like false advertising to me, haha.

      September 14, 2012

    • Goran

I thought the same thing when I first moved here...They usually have a small print preceding the 99c, something like "most items" or 99c and up. Of course, the 99c is done in font size infinite, and the rest of the print in font size 1 :)

For the drivers: We will meet at the campground registration booth Saturday morning at 1130, where we will check-in. Our campsites are # 12 and #17 in loop 1 (they are adjacent to each other). There will likely be little to no cell phone reception up there so make sure you have directions from ahead of time. Directions: From South: NYS Thruway (I-87) Exit 20 at Saugerties. Follow Rte. 32 north for approximately 6 miles to Rte. 32A to Rte. 23A west. Stay on Rte. 23A to the village of Haines Falls. Make first right turn in Haines Falls onto County Rte. 18, campground entrance is 2 miles to the end of the road.

Address: County Route 18, Haines Falls, NY 12436
    GPS Info. (Latitude,Longitude): 42d11'54.23"N, 74d02'41.86"W

OK - I am driving with Goran and Silvia. I have space for 1 in the tent. I could possibly take one more in the car but you need to along my driving Rt.

Goran disregard my email, and bring Dingy and Ducky along for the trip (Michelle has only 3 people in the car now including you, and Ducky can be the 4th). The lake will be open for boating

Hi All - I can drive and carpool. Leaving from the Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn so if you are along that line we can ride. I can also share my tent with one person. I have a table top grill I can bring if you are interested in that kind of BBQ other than camp fire. I'll bring chips etc might have a bottle of wine too.

Hi Michelle, I live in Boerum Hill (Barclays Center). Can you give me a ride?

      September 7, 2012

    • Michelle

You got it Silvia. I have room for one in my tent. I had a friend coming but she's pretty much out now so the space is available.

I know all the spot is full...but can we squeeze in one more person? I have a friend who really really wants to join and it's her last month to be in NY. She's moving to another country.
    Please let me know! Thanks

Ok Eileen I am an organizer yes, but I cannot do everything for you. You have to be a little pro-active in messaging fellow members to ask for rides and accomodations i.e. tent share etc. I can only help in ORGANIZING. You have to figure out how to get your own gear. I have NO WAY of getting sleeping bags, REI I found out does not rent them, you have to figure out a way to pick up your own bag. Heres a place in BK that rents you'd have to call them http://www.brooklynou...
Or you can buy a cheap sleeping bag for like $50 somewhere, it'll be just as good http://www.walmart.co....

      September 11, 2012

    • Raja

Tents people can most likely help out with to share, or you can rent. The place above in Brooklyn does rent a 3 person, and REI rents a 2 person. Dont worry about any cooking related items (stoves, wood, etc) we will bring all that, just bring your own cup, bowl, plate, knife/fork. There will be a food list and I'll need you and your friend to contribute. You will need a pillow, bathroom stuff, some type of flashlight/headlamp, and clothes that suit fall weather by night and summer weather by day. It will be in the low 50s at night. All this needs to packed in an organized fashion, preferably in a single large backpack or duffle bag. As far as rides, I might need you to travel to get the ride. Im trying to get you your friend and Angel in a car. I have traveled with ski gear on a train in past winters to meet up with people for rides. Not trying to be rude or anything, just realistic, but this is how the world of meetup works. Hope you can still make it on this trip.

My car is full this time sorry guys. I'll be sending a carpool email soon as well as "who can bring what" email

    September 7, 2012

  • Raja

Sorry that I did not post exact payment info. Two options can be done. Either can send paypal via paypal site (as personal payment to avoid fee) to [masked]. Or can pay me the $10 in person if you see me prior to date or day of at campground.

Chris Bateman (not his real name) was saying how cool it was to hike under Kaaterskill falls. I always wanted to check that out as I saw the area on my way to Hunter mountain.

    August 29, 2012

    • Raja

I have hiked under Kaaterskill falls, it is a really cool place. We will actually be above Kaaterskill, so we would be hiking to top of it which is a beautiful lookout, and we can hike down from there into middle of two tiers...hoping though with this years water levels the way they've been that the falls are more than just a trickle
